Area sports notes: Southern League honors Lookouts' Andrew Zito

Chattanooga Lookouts vice president Andrew Zito was named outstanding employee of the year when the Southern League announced Monday its executive awards for 2018. According to the league release, Zito was honored "for his fantastic work with regards to the Lookouts' ticketing and group sales effort" and for "a terrific job of continuing to make the Lookouts part of the fabric within Chattanooga's local community." Specifically mentioned in that latter aspect was his United Way's Emerging Leaders United board membership.

Auto Racing

* Zack Hitchcock of Shelbyville won the Super Pro drag-racing class and $5,000 on Saturday at Brainerd Motorsports Park. He won with a 4.93-second burst on a 4.92 dial in his dragster with a big-block Chevrolet engine. Rick Millard was second out of 65 entries with a 5.11 run on a 5.09 dial in a Derek Pickle-owned Chevy dragster. Jeffrey Montgomery won the No Box class with a 6.21 run on a 6.25 dial in a 1986 Mustang, and Johnathan Hagler of Loudon was second. Kat Cross from Cleveland won the 24-entry Junior Dragster class with a 7.94 on a 7.92; Lawson Saine of LaFayette was second.

Volleyball

* Sewanee freshman Lilly Reilly was chosen the Southern Athletic Association volleyball offensive player of the week for her part in the Tigers' 5-0 week, after being named the most outstanding player in Roanoke's Maroon Classic. She had an attack percentage of .345 or better in each of the five wins and totaled 52 kills in the four tournament matches.

* Emily Redden had 26 assists, Dakota Rawiszer added 15 plus four aces and Kayla Wimpee and Sidney Killingsworth had 18 and 16 kills as Chattanooga State won 3-2 (27-25, 19-25, 23-25, 25-12, 15-8) on Monday at The Crown College in Powell, Tennessee. Also for the first-year Lady Tigers (4-5), who have won four of their last five matches, Scarlett Hamrick had 12 digs and Cayla Jacob took part in seven blocks.

* Cleveland State's volleyball team defeated Georgia Northwestern 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-14) on Monday after both lost 3-0 to Johnson University in a tri-match at Cleveland State (5-3). Saturday at home in Rossville, GNTC (2-6) had won 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-14) over The Crown and lost 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-16) to Judson with Savannah Walker totaling 13 kills and Morgen Simmons 19 digs. Simmons had four aces in the win, when Jamese Miller served seven and Mia Clark had five. Kayleigh Goff had 19 assists in the two Monday losses, and Walker was in on seven blocks against Johnson.

Golf

* Nick Powell tied for fifth place individually with a 3-under-par 141 for 36 holes as Sewanee's men's golfers finished sixth out of 14 teams at 593 in the Southern Athletic Association Preview on Sunday at Dickson, Tennessee. The Sewanee "B" team was seventh at 596.

Running

* Covenant College's Lilly Smith and S.K. Lipperd repeated as the USA South's women's runner and rookie runner of the week, respectively, after leading a top-six sweep for the Lady Scots in Huntingdon's cross country meet. Smith, a senior, has been the USAS runner of the week seven times in her career.

* Led by sophomore Kay Vradenburgh in fourth place overall and freshman Rachel Ward in seventh, the Dalton State women's cross country team finished second in the MGA Invitational meet Saturday at Macon, Georgia. Also for the Lady Roadrunners, Reagan Guess was 13th, Hayley Hight 16th and Sabrina Young 21st.

* Brandon Humphreys won the Run of Honor 8-kilometer road race Sunday morning, beginning at the Chattanooga Market and ending in Finley Stadium, and Kristen Curtis was the women's winner and third overall. Humphreys, 18, won in 32:28 with Barry Carroll second at 32:45 and Curtis next at 34:27. Mark Lorello (35:01) was fourth, followed by Rey Estrada, Tulio Soto, Hunter Morgan and Francisco Pedro Jr. also in under 37 minutes. Greg Bauer was ninth and Jennifer Curtis was the second female and 10th overall.
