Chloe Arnold followed a first-half assist with two second-half goals as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team won 3-0 Thursday night against the University of North Alabama at Finley Stadium. Masey Fox scored at 17:22 on a putback of a blocked Arnold shot, and Fox assisted on Arnold's second score at 78:51. Finishing the nonconference part of their schedule at 4-4-1, the Mocs outshot UNA (5-4) 12-10, but goalkeeper Ashton Shields needed only two saves for the shutout.
* The Tennessee Wesleyan University soccer teams lost at Truett McConnell in Appalachian Athletic Conference play Wednesday, 3-1 in the women's game and 2-1 in the men's. Harry Baggaley scored from an Andy Ward assist for the Bulldogs (5-2, 1-1), who outshot the 2017 AAC champion Bears (4-1) 20-12 and had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Siobhan Patterson scored for the TWU women (1-4, 1-1). TWU's scheduled home doubleheader Saturday against Columbia International has been postponed because of hurricane-related travel concerns for the South Carolina school.
Golf
* Steve Golliher of Knoxville and Mike Albonetti of Memphis shot second-round 66s Thursday at Oak Ridge Country Club and led the Tennessee Senior Amateur tournament at 135 and 136. Kenny Wilson of Murfreesboro was third at 141, one stroke ahead of longtime state leaders Danny Green of Jackson and Tim Jackson from the Memphis area. Lookout Mountain's Tom Schreiner shot a 70 and moved into a tie for sixth at 143, and another local golfer, Scott Patton, was tied for 13th at 145. In the Super Senior Amateur, two-time reigning champion Neil Spitalny of Chattanooga shot a 73 and was third at 143 behind Brentwood's Jim Webb at 140 and Kingsport's Tony Green at 142.
* A Drive, Chip & Putt regional competition - one of 10 throughout the United States - will be held Sunday at The Honors Course, beginning at 9 a.m. The top boys' and girls' finishers in each of four age groups (7-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15) will qualify for the national finals April 7 at Augusta National Golf Club, the site of the Masters. Hayden Nall of Cleveland is a 7-9 boys' regional qualifier from the subregional in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Tennis
* Beginning at 9 a.m. today through Sunday, the UTC men's tennis team is hosting five other programs in a new tournament that already has a nickname. It's the Chattanooga Collegiate Clay Court Championships at Manker Patten, or the "5C's," and it includes a 32-man singles draw and a 16-duo doubles bracket. The visiting teams are East Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, Memphis, Alabama-Birmingham and Troy. "We are hoping to have the 5C's tournament be a highlight on the fall schedule as one of the premier events to play in the South," UTC coach Chuck Merzbacher said in a release. "I cannot think of a better venue than the Manker Patten Tennis Club."
* The nine-state IcyHot Southern Junior Cup team competition returns to Chattanooga this weekend, and Matt Barnett of Hixson and the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is part of Team Tennessee's 18-under contingent. The event also includes 16s and 14s boys and girls, and Ann Wright Guerry of the Atlanta area and the prominent Chattanooga tennis family is Georgia's top-seeded girl in 14s. Carly Briggs of Calhoun is No. 1 in 18s. Tennessee, Georgia and Arkansas will be playing today at Baylor School, while the other six state groups will be at the Champions Club, where the 12s Cup was held last weekend. Play begins with doubles at 8 this morning. The teams will be divided for Saturday singles and Sunday doubles into gold, silver and bronze brackets after today's matches.
Volleyball
* Chattanooga State's first-year volleyball team won for the fourth time in five matches Wednesday night, 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-16) on Lookout Mountain against the Covenant junior varsity. Sakari Pack and Kayla Wimpee had nine kills apiece and Sidney Killingsworth added eight for the Lady Tigers (5-5), while Emily Redden and Dakota Rawiszer each contributed 14 assists and Scarlett Hamrick had seven digs and three aces.
* Cleveland State lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-17) on the road against Snead State on Wednesday night. The Lady Cougars are 5-4.
Football
* Sewanee hosts the Austin College Kangaroos in Southern Athletic Association football Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT in the second of three consecutive home games for the Tigers (1-1). The team from Sherman, Texas, leads the series 14-12 but has lost the past three meetings with Sewanee and is 0-2 this season with losses of 37-28 to Southwestern Assemblies of God and 24-14 to Wayland Baptist. Freshmen comprise about half of the roster for Austin, which went 3-7 last year.
