Area sports notes: Lee assistant coach Jessica McIntyre wins national honor

Lee University's Jessica McIntyre is the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's 2018 softball assistant coach of the year for NCAA Division II. The award is sponsored by Easton. McIntyre, a former University of Mobile standout who has begun her sixth year with the Lady Flames, continued to work while undergoing treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma from August 2017 to February, and she was a big part of the team's on-field progress. She also established a book club for the team. "We are fortunate to have her as a part of the staff. She has persevered through a difficult year fighting cancer while being dedicated to the program and our student-athletes," head coach Emily Russell said in a Lee release. "She is such an example of courage and strength. She has a passion for the game as well as mentoring student-athletes. She is an engaging and high-energy coach."

Basketball

* Dalton State College has hired Mike Smith as a men's basketball assistant coach. Smith, 53, was the head coach at Mae Jemison High School in Huntsville, Alabama, last season but has extensive college experience, having worked at Southeastern Louisiana, Centenary, Mississippi Valley State, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Lawson State and Alabama A&M. He played on the New Orleans Privateers teams that went to the NCAA tournament's second round in 1987 and the National Invitation Tournament in 1988. He played professionally for seven seasons in Japan and Europe, averaging 19.9 points and a league-high 15.6 rebounds a game in Turkey in 1992-93. "I am very fortunate to have Coach Smith as my assistant coach," interim head coach Alex Ireland said in a Dalton State release. "I have known Coach Smith for many years. He has great experience on several different levels and is an individual of the highest character."

Golf

* Dalton State freshman Cameron Daniel was chosen the Southern States Athletic Conference women's golfer of the week for her sixth-place finish in her first college tournament, the Keiser Cup, and she led the second-ranked Lady Roadrunners to a second-place team finish in this week's Carey Collegiate Classic with her third-place 146 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. DSC shot 600, five strokes behind 10th-ranked William Carey, as Isabel Rijos and Katie Dalton supported Daniel with a fourth-place 148 and a sixth-place 150. Haejin Choe was 15th at 156.

Soccer

* Makena Giles scored two goals and Ana Ramirez and Mya Patel also scored in Bryan College's 4-0 women's Appalachian Athletic Conference soccer win Wednesday at Bluefield. The Bryan men (4-3-2, 2-1-1) won 2-0 in the doubleheader with an own goal, an unassisted score by Charlie Clarke and advantages of 21-5 in shots and 13-3 in shots on goal. The Lady Lions (4-6, 3-2) led 2-0 by 7:03 and had margins of 43-0 in shots, 24-0 in on-goal attempts and 8-0 in corner kicks. Tennessee Wesleyan's AAC games at Union College were postponed.

* Covenant College lost 1-0 to Piedmont in a USA South women's soccer game Wednesday at Chattanooga Christian. Sarah Weber scored with 3:11 left in regulation time for Piedmont (6-3-1, 2-0), which outshot the Lady Scots (3-5-1, 1-1) 18-9. The Covenant men's game against LaGrange was postponed until Oct. 17 on Lookout Mountain.

* Sam Morgan scored twice, Kiera Giacomini had a goal and an assist and Paige Rupp had two assists as the Sewanee women beat Wesleyan (Georgia) 4-1. Maggie Gall had the other goal for the Tigers (2-7-2).

Volleyball

* Covenant lost 3-2 (25-16, 25-15, 28-30, 23-25, 15-9) to visiting Birmingham-Southern (9-5) in nonconference competition Wednesday night. Sara Delk had 12 kills, Sophie Puertas 23 assists and 12 digs, Hannah Stewart 20 digs, Alexa Spurling eight kills and seven block assists, Leah Buys 13 assists and Emily Moore 13 digs for the Lady Scots (5-9).
