Area sports notes: UTC wins 1-0 at Wofford in SoCon soccer

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team pulled out a 1-0 Southern Conference victory Friday night at Wofford. The Mocs (6-4-2, 2-0-1) scored eight minutes into the second half when Jordan Mueller headed in Chloe Arnold's corner kick. That was Arnold's fifth assist in 2018 to go with a league-high nine goals, and she later had a goal negated by an offside call. UTC led only 16-12 in total shots but 9-2 in shots on frame, with a 4-2 edge in corners. Ashton Shields got her fifth shutout. "Good result on the road. It was a gritty team performance, and we are delighted we kept another clean sheet," coach Gavin McKinney said in a UTC release. The Terriers are 2-8-1, 0-3.

' The Lee University women's soccer team had overwhelming statistical advantages in its Gulf South Conference game Friday night at Delta State but needed two overtime periods to pull out a 1-0 win. That came on Kelsey Yoder's goal at 108:08. The men's game didn't start until nearly 10 EDT, but the Flames (6-2-1, 4-0) won 3-0 on unassisted scores in the first 10:19 by Alfie Coldron, Palle Jespersen and Samaan Williams. They outshot winless DSU 16-4. The Lady Flames (6-2-1, 3-1) had margins of 28-4 in shots, 13-1 in shots on goal and 10-2 in corner kicks, and goalkeeper Taylor Green made only one save in her shutout. Her counterpart had 12.

' The Dalton State men's soccer home game originally scheduled for Thursday night against Mobile was moved to Monday at 5 p.m. The schools' women's teams played Thursday, Mobile winning 4-0.

Volleyball

' UTC lost 3-0 at UNC Greensboro in SoCon volleyball Friday, by the set scores of 25-12, 25-22, 25-20. That dropped the Mocs to 6-10 overall, 2-1 in the conference. Dani Szczepanski had nine kills and Gylian Finch had six kills with 10 digs for the Mocs, who got 24 assists from Jaquelyn Langhaim, 16 digs from Megan Kaufman and 12 digs from Miranda Elpers. For UNCG (8-8, 2-2), Maria Esch had 15 kills, Emily Keilen had 10 and Allison Penner had 34 assists.

' Silvia Sartori had 19 kills and Hanna Matthews produced 35 assists and 10 digs as Lee University beat visiting Christian Brothers 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18) in GSC volleyball. Allie Koepfer added nine kills and 10 digs, Alex Reuter had eight kills and MaKayla Beebe had 15 digs for Lee (7-9, 5-1). GSC kills leader Emma Lenoir from East Hamilton had 15 kills and seven digs for CBU (8-10, 2-4), but six was the Memphis team's next highest kills total.

' Bryan College defeated visiting Union College 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 14-25, 25-22) in their Appalachian Athletic Conference match Friday. Paige Randolph had 15 kills for the winning Lady Lions (8-10, 4-4), who got 13 and 11 assists from Jennifer Keck and Veronica Salas and 14, 13 and 13 digs from Rheagan Keen, Macenzie Krause and Salas. Janie Smith added seven kills, and MyKayla Hampton had six block assists.

' Tennessee Wesleyan lost for the first time in seven AAC matches, 3-1 (18-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-18) to visiting Bluefield, but got 33 assists, 18 digs and four aces from Gabi Catt, the league's reigning setter of the week. Also for the Lady Bulldogs (10-10), Sovanna Ramirez registered 20 digs, Sydney Ritten 12 kills and eight digs, Allana Knowles nine kills, Avery Hilliard seven kills and four block solos and Marjorie Smith seven kills.

' Sewanee's volleyball Tigers improved to 13-3 with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-13) nonconference win at Mississippi University for Women. Destiny Stewart had nine kills with a .438 hitting percentage and three block solos for the Tigers, while Constance Connolly had 26 assists and Peyton Parent served five aces.

' Chattanooga State remains 7-6 in its first season of volleyball after Thursday's scheduled trip to Snead State was canceled.

Football

' After three home games in a row, the Sewanee football team is in Arkansas today to play Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association matchup. Sewanee's Tigers are 2-2 overall, 1-1 in the SAA, while the Warriors are 1-3, 0-2. Hendrix lost 12-9 last Saturday to Austin, which fell 28-20 at Sewanee the week before. Hendrix won 48-42 at Sewanee last year.
