Spring football practice may have ended one week early for Alabama junior right tackle Jedrick Wills.

The 6-foot-5, 316-pounder from Lexington, Kentucky, injured an ankle Saturday afternoon during the Crimson Tide's second scrimmage this spring inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. Wills started all 15 games last season and led Alabama with 50 knockdown blocks while surrendering just one sack.

"We don't know the extent of the injury," Tide coach Nick Saban said in a news conference. "We'll do an MRI probably on Monday. He didn't come back, and we didn't expect him to come back. We'll see what the deal is."

Alabama will practice Tuesday and Thursday before wrapping up Saban's 13th spring in Tuscaloosa with A-Day next Saturday. The A-Day game will start at 2 p.m. EDT, and it will be televised by ESPN2.

Saturday's closed scrimmage consisted of about 135 plays and lasted two hours. Saban said the first-team offense and first-team defense performed well but that a lot of the younger players did not take the necessary steps from the previous weekend's scrimmage.

"I wasn't totally pleased with the way some of those guys made improvement and came along," Saban said. "It's a work in progress, and wherever they are, we're going to keep working with them to get them where they need to be. We were just hopeful that we would make a little more progress."

Tide tidbits

Saban said there were more interceptions during Saturday's second scrimmage but not all of them were the fault of the quarterbacks. Tight ends Major Tennison and Kedrick James were not spotted before the scrimmage in the brief portion of practice open to the media, leaving Miller Forristall heading that group and followed by walk-on Giles Amos with Cameron Latu third.
