Area sports notes: Eli Christman wins college skeet gold medal again

Martin Methodist sophomore Eli Christman from Soddy-Daisy High School won the international skeet gold medal for the second year in a row at the recent ACUI collegiate national shotgun championships in San Antonio. He won one of the six qualifying tournaments last fall to get in the International Shoot Out event and then advanced to the finals, where he hit 57 of 60 targets. Christman holds the junior world record with 58 of 60 in the finals at the USA Shooting Nationals last October. He'll be back in Texas in September for part one of the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Track & Field

» At Jacksonville State's Girls Day Out meet Saturday, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Ashlynd Broling and Julia Henderson finished first and third with personal-best times in the 1500-meter run, and Kennedy Thomson and Nicole Buehrle were first and third in the first 400 for each. UTC had three fifths: Sophia Neglia in the 1500, Katie Coker in the 800 and Buehrle in the 400 hurdles.

» Red Bank High School senior Cole Bullock finished fifth out of 34 entrants Saturday night in the 3200-meter run at the Arcadia (California) Invitational, and Lions coach Hugh Enicks thinks his time of 8:50.70 is the best in Tennessee prep history.

Golf

» Tennessee finished third at 841, one stroke behind Liberty, and UTC was 16th at 881 Sunday in the Mason Rudolph men's golf tournament at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. Vanderbilt won at 823. Individually for UTC, Oliver Simonsen and Etienne Brault closed with 71s for totals of 220 and 221, Moritz Lammel also finished at 221 and Connor Nolan, Lake Johnson and Dominic Jones shot 222, 223 and 223.

Baseball

» Lee University lost 6-0 in its Gulf South series finale Sunday against Delta State (26-10, 15-8). Justin Fragale and Parker Stahlman each had two of the six hits for Lee (17-21, 8-11).

» Chattanooga State won 4-2 twice and 6-4 in its weekend TCCAA series at Southwest Tennessee and is 23-10, 9-6 in league play.

» TCCAA leader Walters State held off host Cleveland State 8-7 Sunday for a series sweep. In defeat, Rhett Baldwin was 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored and matched Jonathan Hickman (two hits) and Andrew Carpenter with two RBIs.

» Sewanee lost an SAA game 9-3 at Hendrix (24-9, 11-4). Carter Huffman doubled twice and Garrett Liebe doubled and singled for the Tigers (18-14, 5-10).

» Covenant lost 6-5 and 16-10 in USA South play Saturday at 17th-ranked Piedmont (24-6, 14-3), but Alex Gonzalez was 5-for-9 in the two games and had three RBIs in the second for the Scots (12-18, 5-12). Brett Kernodle and CJ Edmond each doubled and singled and drove in a run in the first game, and John Mitchell was 2-for-3 and scored twice in the finale.

Softball

» Kayla Louie's one-out bases-loaded single in the seventh inning gave Lee a 9-8 victory Sunday and a GSC series win against Delta State. Claudia Jones was 1-for-2 with a three-run home run and two walks, Kiley Longmire was 3-for-4 and Taylor De Adder and Caroline Freiling each had two RBIs for Lee (18-24, 7-13).

» Cleveland State won 7-2 over visiting Walters State with a three-run homer by Auburn Collake and a solo shot by Kaitlyn Crump in the first inning, and the second game of the TCCAA doubleheader was rained out in the fourth inning. The Lady Cougars are 16-16, 7-12.

» Sewanee lost 7-0 and 10-0 with one total hit in SAA play Saturday against Rhodes (22-8, 9-2) and fell 16-0 Sunday. Charlsey Shirey was 2-for-2 for the Tigers (3-25, 0-14).

» Lindsey Dunn's second five-inning no-hitter in three days highlighted Bryan's two 8-0 wins Saturday against Hiwassee. Olivia Johnson threw a four-hitter in the six-inning first game, when Heidi Smith was 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and three RBIs, Hannah O'Shields scored three runs and Brooke Ford batted in two for the Lady Lions (16-24). Maryah Sober was 1-for-2 with four RBIs and Sydney Olander had two hits in game two.
