University of Tennessee at Chattanooga basketball coach Lamont Paris received word late Monday that sophomore guard Trey Doomes has been ruled eligible to play by the NCAA this coming season. Doomes joined the Mocs this summer as a transfer from West Virginia, and UTC officials believed he might have to sit out the season after playing in a few games last season for the Mountaineers. Doomes applied for a waiver, and the NCAA approved it Monday. "It was a relief," Doomes said in a UTC release Tuesday. "Just having my situation last year made me anxious to get back on the court with my brothers." He participated in the Mocs' recent exhibition trip to the Bahamas, where he had eight points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals in 16 minutes of the opening win over Bahamas Select and 24 points and 10 rebounds in a defeat of the Commonwealth Bank Giants, which had beaten McNeese State and Delaware. Paris was impressed by Doomes' work ethic, among other things. "He plays so hard," Paris said. "He worked hard in practice, so it was no surprise. But when he got into the game, it was just a noticeable difference. We had hopes he'd be able to play this season, so when we got the news we were excited, Trey was excited. When I saw him, there was a big hug."

Golf

» Dalton State College is a unanimous choice to win the Southern States Athletic Conference men's golf championship again this school year. The Roadrunners have won the last five SSAC tournaments, but as coach Ben Rickett said in a school release, "It's always an honor when your peers vote you in that position in the conference, but we have yet to hit a golf shot. The conference championship is nine months away, and a lot can happen in that period of time. The conference is getting stronger each year, and we have to continue our process and take care of what we can control." DSC returns NAIA All-American and SSAC player of the year Ben Rebne, SSAC freshman of the year Zach Womack, tournament medalists Sport Allmond and Matthew Cleary and senior Eli Hendricks and adds freshman Tucker Windham from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School.

» Jinna Wheeler of Mineral Bluff finished second in the second flight of the Georgia Women's Senior Championship with a 174 Monday and Tuesday at Green Island Country Club in Columbus. That was six shots behind flight winner Karen Sagon of Peachthree City but 10 strokes clear of third place. Deb Jackson of Johns Creek won the championship flight at 154.
