Area sports notes: Silverdale alumnus Josh Brady selected for FCS all-star game

Josh Brady from Chattanooga and Silverdale Baptist Academy is one of four Jacksonville State seniors invited to the annual Football Championship Subdivision all-star game this Sunday in DeLand, Florida. It is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be streamed at FloFootball.com. Brady, who started 48 games at long snapper in his Gamecocks career, successfully delivered 497 snaps, including 142 in 2018, according to a JSU release.

Tennis

* Wesley Cash of Chattanooga and Mark Vines of Naples, Florida, got off to a good start with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Californian Maurice Hunter and Texan Peter Markes in Doubles A of the Crabel Capital Men's 60 Masters tennis tournament in Palm Springs, but all matches were rained out Wednesday. Vines is 2-0 in his Singles A round robin. UTC alumnus Ken Koelling is 1-1 in Singles B.

Basketball

* Even without injured Ryan Montgomery, the senior from Central High School averaging 22.8 points per game, the Lee University men's basketball team won handily Wednesday afternoon at North Georgia, 77-64. Each team is 4-3. Parker Suedekum was 4-for-6 on 3-point shots and totaled 21 points and five assists for Lee, while Quay Kennedy had 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Kentrell Evans and Josh Lowe scored 11 and 10 points. Using only seven players, the Flames led 50-38 at halftime and played tight defense in the second half.

* The Covenant College men began USA South play Tuesday night with a 68-62 victory at Maryville. All-American Will Crumly had 29 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for Covenant (4-2), and Chris Barnette was 4-of-6 on 3s and scored 19 points. Promise Igbanu added 11.

* Rachel Thomas had 20 points and eight rebounds in leading the Covenant women to a 55-46 win in their USA South opener at Agnes Scott. Covenant (3-5) scored the last eight points. Hannah Monday had 11 points, four blocks and four steals, Margo Koby also scored 11 points and Ruthie Moore had seven assists and eight rebounds.

* The Bryan College women are 10-0 overall and 7-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference after winning 98-63 Wednesday at Brenau, but the Bryan men lost 58-50 at home to Johnson from Knoxville. Destiny Kassner had 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting and seven rebounds for the Lady Lions, who got 14 and 13 points from Shayla Ludy and Karli Combs, with three 3s apiece, and 12 points and nine assists from Deandra Luna. For the Lions (6-4), who shot 29.6% for the game, Brandon Thomas had 17 points and seven rebounds.

* The Sewanee women slipped to 3-5 with a 52-44 loss at MUW (2-5). A 21-13 second quarter was the difference. Abby Young scored 14 points and Bella Bombassi had 10 rebounds for Sewanee, and Ellie Treanton had four steals with nine points.

* Cleveland State's Lady Cougars took the perennial TCCAA champions to overtime before falling 74-71 at Walters State. The Walters men won 59-45. Asjah Harrell had 31 points, five steals and five assists and Britnay Gore had 16 rebounds with 11 points for the Lady Cougars (4-5, 3-1). Jaquez Hicks scored 12 points and matched Jadakiss Williams with 11 rebounds for the Cougars (5-5, 2-2), and Demonte Person had six assists.

* Tennessee Wesleyan's men improved to 4-5 with a 74-64 win Tuesday night at Pensacola Christian, as Bryant Bernard had 16 points and four steals and Billy Balogun and Joshua Chairs scored 14 points each, Balogun with nine rebounds and three thefts. Lawrence Castor had four blocks with 10 points, and Ty Patterson grabbed eight rebounds.

Field Hockey

* Sewanee seniors Ceara Caffrey and Jo Jo Young and sophomore Anne Cleveland were named to the 2019 NCAA Division III All-Great Lakes Region second team by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. It was the third all-region listing each for high-scoring Caffrey and defender Young and the second for Cleveland. Caffrey had 16 goals this year and 57 for her Tigers career.
