Area sports notes: Lee University track teams shine in indoor season opener

Lee University began its indoor track and field season Friday with a strong showing in Birmingham, Alabama, at the BSC Indoor Icebreaker, which included teams from all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA. Lee's Christian Noble set a meet and school record while winning the men's 3000-meter run in 8:10.21 - a provisional qualifying time for nationals - and the Lady Flames' Charlee Boxall while winning the 3000 (10:02.36) and Avery Truelove (11.16 meters) in the triple jump bettered their previous program records. Daniel Surman tied his school record (4.45 meters with his first-place pole vault. Toni Moore was second to Boxall in the 3000 and the mile runner-up as well, and Caleb Eagleson was fourth in the men's 3000.

Basketball

* The nationally seventh-ranked Lee women improved to 9-0 with a 67-51 home win Saturday against Young Harris, and the Lee men followed with a 75-68 victory over Martin Methodist. Lindsey Roddy scored 23 points and Abby Bertram had 17 plus four steals for the Lady Flames, and Becca Cheeks had eight rebounds with 10 points. Roddy, Taylor Boggess and Maddie Long each made three steals. For the Flames (5-3), Quay Kennedy and Parker Suedekum had 29 and 18 points and nine rebounds and three steals each, and Suedekum added seven assists. Kentrell Evans had four assists.

* With 41 points from Deandra Luna, the Bryan College women rose to 11-0, 8-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, with a 94-76 victory at Milligan, whose men won 84-69. Luna, who also had six rebounds, was 15-of-21 from the field and 7-of-10 on 3s. Karli Combs and Sarah Cain scored 12 and 11 points. For the Bryan men (6-5, 5-3), Austin Douglas had 17 points and 14 rebounds and Isaiah McClain, Brandon Thomas and Keaton Dotson scored 15, 14 and 13 points, Thomas with nine rebounds.

* Led by Chris Barnette, the Covenant College men overcame a 16-point deficit and pulled out a 79-77 USA South home win Saturday against Huntingdon. Barnette scored 23 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, and his jump shots with 34 and four seconds to go gave the Scots (5-2, 2-0) their only leads of the game. Down 48-35 at halftime, Covenant got even at 63 with 10:54 remaining and stayed within a basket the rest of the way. Barnette also had seven assists, and Zack Allen scored 12 points on 4-of-5 3-point shooting.

* The Covenant women lost 80-58 in a USA South game at Piedmont (6-3, 3-0) but got 20 points from Rachel Thomas and 15 from Hannah Monday. Ruthie Moore and Cosette Kirsch had eight and seven rebounds and four assists apiece for the Lady Scots (3-6, 1-1).

* Sewanee opened Southern Athletic Association play at home with a 57-45 women's win over Centre and a 80-58 men's rout of a Colonels team that had won six games in a row and is 7-2. McCallie graduate Adrian Thomas scored a career-high 34 points on 15-of-19 shooting for the Sewanee men (7-2). Thomas, who also made three steals, was 8-of-8 from the field in scoring 20 second-half points. Mackie Garwood had 12 points with four 3s and Jordan Warlick scored 11 for the Tigers, while Ryan Starr passed for six assists and Jonny Crumly had eight rebounds and three blocks. Ellie Treanton scored 12 points and Lakeisha Phillips and Kinsley Logan added 11 and 10 for the Sewanee women (4-5), Logan with four assists, and Abby Young and Ashley Stewart had eight and seven rebounds.

* Cleveland State's Lady Cougars gave Jackson State its first loss this season, 76-66, but the Jackson State men stayed unbeaten with a 78-76 TCCAA road win. Kavion Hancock made the winning layup at the buzzer and totaled 28 points for the Green Jays (10-0, 5-0), who trailed by 13 midway through the second half. Jadakiss Williams scored 19 points and Jaquez Hicks and Demonte Person had 13 each for the Cougars (5-6, 2-3), Hicks with 11 rebounds and Person with six assists. The Cleveland State women (5-5, 4-1) led the Lady Green Jays (9-1, 4-1) by 20 late in the second quarter and got 23 points, seven steals and four assists from Asjah Harrell and 13 points and nine rebounds from Za'kkria Robinson. Charisma Barner and Cassidy Nihoff scored 12 and 11 points.

Football

* Times Free Press sports writer and "Press Row" radio co-host David Paschall will be the guest speaker Monday at the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's monthly luncheon meeting at the Masonic Center at 551 W. 21st St., and the public is welcome. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without, and parking is free. Paschall will be talking about the 2019 college football season and upcoming postseason.
