Area sports notes: UTC wrestlers win two matches at 11th-ranked Iowa State

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team lost 26-7 Saturday night at 11th-ranked Iowa State but got impressive wins from sophomore Tanner Smith and senior Rodney Jones and four losses by decision of two points or closer. Smith won by 13-1 major decision at 149 pounds and Jones prevailed 8-4 at 197 for the Mocs (3-5), who have had four duals against teams currently in the national Top 25. UTC's Matthew Waddell, ranked 20th individually at 184, fell 3-1 in sudden victory to No. 11 Samuel Colbray, and Franco Valdes, Andrew Nicholson and Hunter Fortner lost 7-6, 5-3 and 6-4. The Cyclones are 2-1.

Swimming

* The Baylor Swim Club's Ellie Waldrep finished seventh in the girls' 200-yard backstroke Saturday as the Speedo Winter Junior Championships-East meet concluded at Georgia Tech. It was her third seventh of the event, counting a first-day relay, and her seventh top-24 finish. The BSC girls wound up 17th out of 61 teams scoring at least one point. Carpet Capital Aquatics from Dalton, Georgia, was 11th among 69 boys' clubs from the Eastern half of the United States, ending with an 11th place by Roman Valdez, Jonathan Shaheen, Henry Bethel and Orrin Withrow in the 4x100 freestyle relay. Bethel's sixth place in the 100 breaststroke was the best finish for a Chattanooga-area participant.

Basketball

* The Bryan College basketball Lady Lions roared back from a 17-point halftime deficit to go to 13-0 for the season with a 77-69 win Saturday at Martin Methodist. Bryan is ranked 17th in NAIA Division II, but Martin Methodist is in NAIA Division I and took temporary control with a 26-9 second quarter. The Lady Lions regrouped, though, and dominated the last two quarters 18-9 and 28-12. Sarah Cain made five 3-point baskets and led Bryan with 23 points, and Shayla Ludy and Kaitlynn Hennessee scored 15 and 11. Hennessee led with seven rebounds, and Deandra Luna had seven assists and six rebounds with nine points.

* The Bryan men lost 74-70 at Johnson in Knoxville and now are 6-7. Austin Douglas had 20 points and 11 rebounds in the Lions' fifth consecutive defeat, and Isaiah McClain had 12 points and three steals. Toure Fudge was 6-of-9 on 3s in scoring 20 points for Johnson (10-5).

* Tennessee Wesleyan's women improved to 5-4 in the AAC with a 59-56 road win over the Columbia Koalas. A 16-11 fourth quarter made the difference for the Lady Bulldogs (5-6 overall), who got 13 and 12 points and nine rebounds apiece from Madison McClurg and Savannah Atkins and 11 points and four steals from Chloe Yearwood. Atkins hit four 3s.

* Double-doubles by Hannah Monday and Ruthie Moore led the Covenant College women to an 87-77 home win over Johnson. Monday had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Moore almost triple-doubled with 16 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds and five steals, while Cosette Kirsch and Margo Koby added 17 and 12 points and four assists each for the Lady Scots (4-7). Rachel Thomas scored 11 points. Keelie Lusby led five double-figure scorers for the 5-7 Knoxville team with 23 points and passed for nine assists.

* Despite ending the game with only five healthy players Saturday, Cleveland State's Lady Cougars finished the 2019 portion of their schedule with their third straight victory and sixth in eight games, 84-79 at Gadsden State. Asjah Harrell scored 28 points for the Lady Cougars (7-5).

* Chattanooga State's men lost for the second day in a row at Brunswick Community College in North Carolina, 78-74 Saturday to Caldwell Tech in Brunswick's holiday tournament. The Tigers are 6-6.
