Area sports notes: State baseball coaches honor Baylor trio

The Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association recognized a trio from Baylor School at its annual awards luncheon in Franklin. Teddy Lepcio, a 2018 Baylor graduate now at West Point, was honored as the Division II high school player of the year. Lepcio captained the 2018 Red Raiders to their first TSSAA state championship in 12 years and batted .363 with four home runs and 28 RBIs. He also was a National Merit Scholar, an AP Scholar, editor of the school paper and chair of the Student Leadership Board. Baylor's Greg Elie and Mike Kinney were the TBCA's Division II coaches of the year. In their first year as co-head coaches, they directed the Red Raiders to a 24-6 record with Division II-AA region and state titles.

» Los Angeles Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's monthly meeting at noon Monday at the Chattanooga Convention Center, room 21, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with lunch, $4 without. Honeycutt is a former Lakeview High School star who continues to live in the area.

Wrestling

» The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga lost two close matches, 22-16 to 16th-ranked Arizona State and 21-15 to Old Dominion, as the Virginia Duals concluded Saturday in Hampton. UTC heavyweight Connor Tolley won two decisions. The Mocs went 1-3 and finished sixth in the tournament and are 2-5 for the season. They host VMI at 2 p.m. next Sunday.

Fishing

» FLW Tour rookie Miles Burghoff of Hixson barely missed being a top-10 finalist in the season-opening bass tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Texas. His three-day total Saturday of 51 pounds, 8 ounces was good for 12th place and $12,000 but was only 11 ounces out of 10th. Terry Bolton of Kentucky led with 73-13.

Basketball

» Lee University won 87-64 over the University of Alabama in Huntsville women but lost 75-58 to the UAH men in Gulf South Conference play Saturday in Cleveland. Lindsey Roddy made four of five 3-point shots and totaled 20 points for Lee's first-place Lady Flames (13-3, 7-1), and Taylor Boggess was 7-of-8 overall and 3-of-4 on 3s while scoring 17. Abby Bertram (also with four 3s), Haley Schubert and Kayla Tillie added 14, 13 and 10 points, and Becca Cheeks had eight rebounds. Baylee Johnson scored 27 points and Signal Mountain's Aryn Sanders had 15 for UAH (6-8, 4-4). Colton Blevins had 22 and Ryan Montgomery 13 for the Lee men (9-7, 6-2). Sam Orf had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Chargers (12-4, 5-3), and McCallie graduate Max Shulman hit four of four 3s for 12 points.

» Chattanooga State won 80-62 in the men's game but lost 56-51 in the women's in Saturday's TCCAA doubleheader against visiting Cleveland State. The winning Tigers (9-6, 4-3) got 22 points with four 3s and eight rebounds from Lorenzo Ferrell, 15 points and nine assists from A.J. Morris, 14 points from Jaden Rodriguez and 11 rebounds with nine points from Anthony Booker. For the Lady Cougars (5-9, 3-3), Michaela Bennefield had 18 points and four steals and Jordan Smith and Za'kkria Robinson added 13 and 10 points and seven and eight rebounds.

» Bryan's Lady Lions, ranked 15th in NAIA Division II, are 15-1 and 13-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference after Saturday's 94-69 home win over St. Andrews, and the Bryan men (9-9, 6-6) won 79-68. St. Andrews had defeated the Lions on Nov. 10.

» Dalton State led by 24 points at halftime on the way to a 98-74 Southern States Athletic Conference home win over Brewton-Parker. Sean Cranney hit all 13 of his free throws in scoring 26 points for the Roadrunners (10-6, 5-3), and Randy Bell and Aaron Burress scored 14 each with seven and six rebounds. Sean Chislom had 11 points.

» Covenant's teams won their USA South games, the men 78-74 over visiting William Peace and the Lady Scots 74-47 at Agnes Scott with Kaley Hallmark scoring 15 points with five 3s and Bekah Walter and Margo Koby adding 13 and 11. Taylor Robinson had five assists for Covenant (5-11, 3-5), and Joanna Smith got to 804 career rebounds. For the Scots (9-6, 8-0), Bailey Spragg had 18 points, seven assists and seven rebounds and James Mitchell had 17 points with 5-of-5 3-point shooting and four steals. Noah Oetjen and Will Crumly added 15 and 13 points.

» The Georgia Northwestern Technical College men ended a long holiday break with a 91-71 loss Friday night at The Crown College in Powell, Tennessee, but Cole McKeehan and Jeremy Wilson had five 3s apiece and 23 and 20 points in defeat. Also for the Bobcats (2-9), J.T. Langford had 16 points and 13 rebounds and Kannen Derryberry made four steals.
