Area sports notes: TSSAA bowling state tournament starts

The individual part of the TSSAA state bowling tournament starts today in Smyrna, and the McCallie and Notre Dame boys and Girls Preparatory School and Baylor girls will compete in Division II team quarterfinals Friday afternoon. No area Division I teams advanced to Smyrna, but Rhea County's Baylee Shipley (208.81 season average) and Phillip Rogers (204.92), Walker Valley's Natily Haro (195.90) and Jacob Brown (200.94), Arts & Sciences' Tyris Nelson (189.93), Bradley Central's Mikayla Stewart (182.41) and Soddy-Daisy's Haley Burkes (146.57), Kelsey Burkes (138.08) and Jase Perry (185.35) qualified for the individual events. Local D-II individual qualifiers are Notre Dame's C.J. Petrin (207.56), Griffen Lee (175.83), Tariq Griffen (168.48) and Gretchen Eckler (139.66); McCallie's Andrew Haun (188.78) and Jeff Hieronymus (183.44); Baylor's Dalton Chuba (181.63), Abby McNamara (141.65) and Mya McGee (137.61); and GPS's Emma Prostko (144.59), Katelyn Beach (138.97) and Allie Foropoulous (138.86). Notre Dame (19-1) will face Christian Brothers (12-3) while McCallie (7-8) challenges Pope John Paul II (11-1) at 1 p.m. EST on Friday. The Baylor girls (8-2) will take on St. Benedict (11-1) at 4 p.m. with GPS (6-7) matched against PJP (9-1).

» The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has added defensive back Kameron Brown to its commitments for the 2019 football recruiting class. Brown (5-foot-11, 180) is from Theodore (Alabama) High School and was chosen to the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 7A all-state second team this past season after earning honorable mention as a junior. Brown, who played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic in December, chose UTC over offers from FBS schools Southern Mississippi and Louisiana-Monroe as well as FCS programs Kennesaw State, Mercer and Austin Peay.

Basketball

» Delaino Walker's 3-point basket with nine seconds to play and two free throws at 0:01 lifted the Cleveland State men's basketball team to a 78-77 TCCAA upset win Wednesday at Walters State. Jonathon King scored 20 points and Walker had 18 and matched Demonte Person with six assists for the Cougars (6-9, 3-5), who led 23-5 early and 63-53 with 10 minutes to go but fell behind 75-71. Darius Turman scored 13 points and Maurice Dickson had 11 plus 11 rebounds. Kajuan Hale and Miles Thomas had 20 and 18 points and seven and six assists for the Senators (14-6, 5-3). The Lady Cougars (5-10, 3-4) lost 70-55 to Walters (15-4, 7-0) but got six 3s and 26 points from Hannah Phillips, 12 points and nine rebounds from Britnay Gore, 11 rebounds from Kaitlin Crump and five assists from Jordan Smith.

» The Bryan College women are 16-1, 14-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, after winning 89-51 at Point University, where the Bryan men lost 82-79. Shayla Ludy led the Lady Lions with 20 points and four 3s, while Destiny Kassner and Karli Combs had 11 points each, Deandra Luna 10 assists and To'Nesha Allison 10 points, 14 rebounds and five steals. For the Lions (9-10, 6-7), EJ Bush followed his 32-point, 11-rebound game Saturday with 18 points, Keaton Dotson and Isaiah McClain scored 12 each and AJ Jones and Clay Hertel added 10 apiece. Taboris Griggs and Sae'Quahn Rogers scored 24 and 19 with five 3s each for Point (6-14, 4-9), Griggs adding 10 rebounds.

» Tennessee Wesleyan lost 68-54 in the women's game and 90-75 in the men's in AAC play at Montreat. Hunter Simpson had 15 points for the TWU women (9-7, 7-7). QD Cox scored 18 with five 3s and Ty Patterson had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs (8-9, 4-8), who trailed 44-19 at halftime.

» Kelley Wandell's 20 points and nine rebounds and Brooke McCurdy's six 3s for 18 points led Maryville (8-10, 6-3) to an 82-70 USA South women's win at Covenant (5-12, 3-6), which got 17 points from Bekah Walter, 12 from Joanna Smith, 10 plus eight rebounds and four steals from Raquel Rosa and five steals and four assists from Taylor Robinson.
