Area sports notes: Hunter Simpson raises TWU record to 1,601 points

The Tennessee Wesleyan University women's basketball team scored only 48 points Saturday in its fourth consecutive victory, winning by eight at Point University, but senior guard Hunter Simpson from Madisonville had 12 of them and became the first player to exceed 1,600 for a Lady Bulldogs career. Simpson had broken Monique Herron's program record of 1,586 on Wednesday and now has 1,601. The reigning Appalachian Athletic Conference player of the year also made four steals for TWU (13-7, 11-7). The TWU men (8-12, 4-11) lost for the ninth consecutive time, 102-93, but got eight 3-point baskets and 29 points from QD Cox and 18 points, seven assists and four steals from Jalen Oliver. Djimon Wilson scored 13 points and Todd Lansden had 10 rebounds.

» Bryan College won both of its AAC home games against Union College, 105-69 for the league-leading and nationally 15th-ranked Lady Lions (20-1, 18-0) and 82-77 for the men. EJ Bush had 19 points and four blocked shots, Brandon Thomas and Keaton Dotson 16 points each, KJ Hawkins 10 assists and Clay Hertel and Thomas nine and seven rebounds for the Lions (11-11, 8-8). Amber Levi and Tesa Johnson scored 19 and 18 points, Levi with five assists, and Deandra Luna contributed 17 points, seven assists and six steals for the women. To'Nesha Allison had 13 points and Tristan McClellan eight assists.

» Dalton State beat visiting Mobile 81-73 for homecoming in a Southern States Athletic Conference men's game after taking a 28-10 lead. Malik Pugh led the winners (12-9, 7-6) with 22 points, while Sean Chislom scored 16 and Randy Bell and Aaron Burress added 11 and 10.

» Lee University lost both of its Gulf South Conference games at Delta State. The 57-36 defeat for the Lady Flames (16-4, 10-2) was their first in nine games. They shot 23.6 percent overall, 3-of-26 on 3s, and were led in scoring by Abby Bertram and Haley Schubert with 11 points each; Becca Cheeks had 10 rebounds. The Lee men (11-9, 8-4) lost 70-56 but got 29 points and seven rebounds from Ryan Montgomery. Parker Suedekum had eight assists.

» North Carolina Wesleyan gave the Covenant College men their first USA South loss of the season, 80-77, after the Covenant women trounced winless Wesleyan of Georgia 91-14. Reserve Nichole Rittgers had 21 points in 21 minutes on 7-of-11 3-point shooting for the Lady Scots (7-13, 5-7), and Riley Wagaman grabbed 11 rebounds, seven offensive. For the Scots (12-7, 11-1), Will Crumly had 28 points and eight rebounds, Mitchell Hollis 19 points with five 3s and Bailey Spragg 14 points, seven assists and three steals. NCWU is 16-3, 9-2.

» The Cleveland State Cougars beat visiting Columbia State 79-70 in TCCAA play, giving them four wins in a row and six in seven games. Exavian Young hit four of six 3s in scoring 21 points for the Cougars (9-9, 6-5), and Jonathon King scored 16 and Delaino Walker added 12. Demonte Person had 10 points and eight assists. Columbia State is not playing a women's schedule this season.

» Chattanooga State's men also are 6-5 in TCCAA games after routing Jackson State 100-74 at home Saturday. The Tigers are 12-8 overall.

» Sewanee won its Southern Athletic Association home doubleheader Friday night against Birmingham-Southern, 72-69 in two overtimes in the women's game and 70-55 in the men's. Ellie Treanton scored 20 points, including the last two, and added seven rebounds for the female Tigers (8-11, 2-6), and Kinsley Logan made five 3s for 15 points. Bella Taylor had seven assists with nine points, and Katie Roth had nine rebounds. Sue Kim moved into second place in career assists for the program, 27 short of Kayla Goodwin's 371. For the Sewanee men (15-4, 4-4), Luke Smith had 17 points, eight assists and five steals, Cam Caldwell 12 points and four blocks, Hunter Buescher 11 points and Matt Lee 10 rebounds.
