Area sports notes: Dalton State has five golf All-Americans

Dalton State College golfer Ben Rebne received his second first-team All-America designation of 2019, and four Lady Roadrunners players joined him on official NAIA All-America teams: Isabel Rijos on the women's first team, Katie Dalton and Cameron Daniel on the second team and Hannah Gasaway on the third team. Dalton followed former teammate Caroline Griffin as a four-time All-American, and Rijos is a three-time selection with one season still to go. Rijos had two first-place finishes, three other top-fives and four additional top-10s in 10 tournaments this past season, with a 76.12 stroke average. Dalton was medalist twice and Daniel had three top-fives and six top-10s as a freshman, while Gasaway had two top-fives. Dalton had a 77.02 career scoring average in 86 rounds of play. Rebne, already a Golf Coaches Association of America first-teamer and a Nicklaus Award finalist, had three wins and five other top-fives in his last nine college tournaments, with a 72.56 stroke average for 27 rounds. DSC was No. 6 in the NAIA postseason women's poll.

Baseball

» Third baseman Miguel Pimentel capped his Lee University baseball career with All-America honorable mention Monday from the NCAA D2 College Commissioners Association. The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is the second Flames baseball player to receive All-America mention in Lee's NCAA era, following 2016 third-teamer Ben Holland. Pimentel had 13 home runs, four triples, 41 runs batted in and 36 walks in 2019.

» Cleveland State catcher Kendall Catlett from Pigeon Forge committed Sunday to continue his baseball career at Maryville College in NCAA Division III and the USA South conference. "I am really happy Kendall is signing at Maryville College," Cougars coach Mike Policastro said in a Cleveland State web post. "It is a great fit for him, and it is where he wanted to go. He did a good job for us this past year. He plays hard and is a smart player who will have a lot of success at Maryville."

Auto Racing

' Twenty-year strip veteran Steve Dowdy of Ringgold won the $2,500 top prize in Super Pro drag racing Saturday night at Brainerd Motorsports Park. Dowdy won with a 5.94-second run on a 5.92 dial, and Chris Whittle of LaFayette was second with a 4.73 burst on a 4.72 dial. Another Ringgold resident, Hugh Harris, had the meet's low elapsed time (4.48) and top speed (155 mph). And Bradley Smith of Ringgold won in Super Stock with a 6.50 on a 6.52 in a 1963 Dodge, with his son Steven second in a 1973 Plymouth Duster. Ron Lee of Ooltewah won the Open Wheel class with a 4.80 on a 4.75 in a 1927 Ford Roadster; Nashville's Dan French was second. Strip champion Ray Zumstein won the No Box class in a 1965 Valiant, and strip hall of famer L.C. Bigham of Tunnel Hill was second. Brianna Russell won the Gasser class with a 6.50 on a 6.51 in a 1953 Willys; Tony Incardon was second in a 1962 Ford Rancher. In the 24-entry Junior Dragster field, John Varner of Temple, Georgia, was first with Ringgold's Caden Mashburn second and Ashley McCarver third.

Basketball

» Season tickets have gone on sale for both University of Tennessee at Chattanooga basketball teams, and they are available at GoMocs.com or at the McKenzie Arena box office, or by phone at 266-MOCS. For the men's home games, season prices for lower-level reserved seating range from $105 in the 200 level end zone to $190, with a Mocs Club donation required, for padded seats. Oother options are $135 and $165. Women's season tickets range from $85 for faculty and staff general admission to $100 for regular admission and $125 for padded reserved seats, again with a Mocs Club donation required.

» Cleveland State has landed a transfer from another two-year school, LSU-Eunice, for its region-champion men's basketball team: 6-foot-5 perimeter player Jakobey Hitchens. "Jakobey brings good size at the guard position as well as athleticism," Cougars coach Lee Cigliano said. "I believe he will be able to guard a couple of positions defensively for us. He has the ability to score with 3-point range, and he can get to the basket. We are looking forward to having him for his sophomore season. I think he fits what we do."
