Area college softball roundup: Mocs 13-1 after two wins at Madeira Beach

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team's splendid season start reached 13-1 with two wins Friday at the Madeira Beach Invitational in Florida.

The Mocs edged Villanova 2-1 and defeated Presbyterian 6-3.

UTC's Celie Hudson (5-1) pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts in the first game, when Halie Williamson went 2-for-2 with a fifth-inning home run and Gracey Kruse doubled in pinch runner Taylor Chadwick in the sixth.

Presbyterian took the lead with a three-run second inning in the next game, but the Mocs got one run back on Sidney Swantic's RBI single in the third and won with a five-run sixth featuring a three-run pinch-hit homer by Morgan Kazerooni and a two-run homer by Emma Sturdivant. Hudson got the save with a hitless seventh after winning pitcher Allison Swinford (4-0) allowed four hits and no runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Sturdivant was 2-for-3 and Aly Walker was 2-for-4 for UTC.

» Cumberland 8-5, Bryan 5-1: At Lebanon, Tennessee, the Lady Lions dropped to 3-9 although Hannah O'Shields and Austyn Durham bookended the first-game scoring with a two-run homer and a three-run blast, respectively.

Cumberland is 9-2.

Sydney Olander and Maryah Sober each was 2-for-3 and Heidi Smith was 2-for-4 for Bryan in the first game, Olander scoring twice. Madison Owens had the RBI in game two.

Rainouts otherwise

Covenant College's scheduled home doubleheader Friday against Judson was rained out. The Lady Scots (2-3) host Pfeiffer in two games Saturday, starting at noon.

Similarly, the TCCAA doubleheaders with Cleveland State hosting Jackson State and Chattanooga State visiting Walters State were not played Friday, but Saturday's same matchups are still on. The action in Cleveland starts at noon; first pitch in Morristown is set for 2 p.m., with a noon start for Sunday's games.
