Area college softball roundup: UTC goes 1-1, now 14-2

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team is 14-2 after losing 5-4 to Florida A&M University in eight innings and beating St. John's 11-4 on Saturday in the Madeira Beach Invitational tournament in Florida.

Freshman Mariah Ramirez got the pitching win for the Mocs with a complete game, and senior catcher Amanda Beltran was 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a two-run single. Aly Walker was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs and Emma Sturdivant also had two RBIs while Emily Coltharp walked twice and scored three times. UTC had eight hits and 11 walks on offense in that game.

Against FAMU the Mocs totaled seven hits but committed three errors leading to four unearned runs. Devan Brown was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Sidney Swantic was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Halie Williamson was 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

UTC faces Boston College on Sunday.

Bryan College's scheduled home doubleheader was canceled.

» Chattanooga State 6-12, Walters State 5-7: At Morristown, Tennessee, Haley Smith was virtually unstoppable as the 16th-ranked Lady Tigers got off to a good delayed start in TCCAA play by sweeping one of their top challengers.

Smith was 6-for-8 with three home runs and nine RBIs in the two games. She had five of her team's six RBIs in the first game, when Katie Cheeseman was 2-for-3 and Brooke Parrott got the complete-game pitching win. Besides Smith in game two, Ashlyn Holland was 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs and Breanna Vinson was 2-for-3 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases for Chattanooga State (14-2).

» Cleveland State 8-2, Jackson State 5-8: At Cleveland, the host Lady Cougars (5-4, 1-1) won their first TCCAA game but lost in their second.

» Pfeiffer 8-9, Covenant 0-0: On Lookout Mountain, the Lady Scots had three hits and two hits and dropped to 2-5.
