Area sports notes: Softball Mocs fall 9-6 to Boston College

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team wrapped up its visit to the Madeira Beach (Florida) Invitational with a 9-6 loss to Boston College on Sunday morning. Each team scored three unearned runs, but the Eagles won with a tiebreaking four-run seventh inning featuring a two-run triple by Lexi DiEmmanuele. She was 2-for-3 with an RBI walk and a home run also. UTC's Aly Walker had an RBI walk and an RBI single, and Halie Williamson was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. Emily Coltharp also was 2-for-4 for the Mocs (14-3), who will return to Florida for 11 scheduled games March 8-17 in Clearwater.

» Sewanee began Southern Athletic Association play Saturday with 16-4 and 12-4 home losses to ninth-ranked Berry. Hanna Judycki was 3-for-4 in the second game for the Tigers (0-8), and Taylor Wagner had an RBI double and a tw0-run single among three hits for the day. Samantha Crabtree had six hits and three RBIs for Berry (5-0).

Tennis

» UTC lost 4-3 in men's tennis Saturday to visiting Tennessee Tech. The Mocs (8-5) took the doubles point with wins by Simon Bustamante with Kerim Hyatt and Niklas Gerdes with Tomas Rodriguez, and Rodriguez won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles while Gerdes prevailed 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 1. The UTC women ended a seven-match win streak with a 7-0 loss at Tennessee and are 7-3. The Mocs' Polina Goloputova gave the Volunteers' Sadie Hammond a 6-3, 6-4 challenge at No. 1 singles.

» In the ITA Indoor National Championships, Sewanee's 12th-ranked women lost 7-2 to No. 11 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday in Murfreesboro and 5-4 to No. 9 Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the seventh-place match Sunday. Against CMU, the Tigers' Catherine Owen and Ellie Czura won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles over Division III's second-ranked duo and Czura won 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles against the No. 22 individual while Owen lost 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 to sixth-ranked Danna Taylor. Sewanee's Sara Thompson at No. 4 and Haley Tucker at No. 5 were edged 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11) and 6-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-0). Against MIT, Owen and Czura won in both doubles and singles for the Tigers (3-4), and Mary Jane McCaghren and Maura McCrary also won in doubles.

» The Lee women began their spring-break trip with a 7-0 defeat of Seton Hill on Sunday in Orlando, Florida. The closest scores were 6-1, 6-3. Carley Sickinger, Asia Grzegrzolka, Lisa Kirr and Laura Beth Hardesty won in both doubles and singles for Lee (5-2). Lauren Trammell and Lauren Good were the other singles victors.

Baseball

» Chattanooga State opened TCCAA play Saturday with 5-1 and 1-0 losses at second-ranked Walters State. Noah Fitzgerald had an RBI double and Bass Cooper was 2-for-3 in the first game for the Tigers (6-6). They had just two hits off Casey Stone (4-0) in game two, but the Senators (12-3) got only three off Bryce Woody and Kyle Nunn, who totaled seven strikeouts in six innings. Jerry Hammons was 2-for-3 with a home run.

» Tennessee Wesleyan is 15-2 after beating Montreat 10-3 and 9-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference openers Saturday. Dan Fry was 3-for-3 with two homers, three RBIs and three runs scored in game one, when Braden Mosley homered and singled, Adrian Marquez had two RBIs and Tyler Reichenborn had two hits and scored twice. Mosley and Bryce Giles homered in game two, Mosley with five RBIs, and Anthony Williams had two RBIs and two runs. Cole Bellair allowed one hit and struck out 11 batters in six innings.

» Sewanee lost 8-6 and won 3-2 in Saturday's doubleheader against visiting Wittenberg. The Tigers (8-2) won with a three-run fourth inning, when Garrett Liebe doubled in two runs and scored on Jared Demkowicz's double. Liebe was 2-for-2 and Demkowicz was 2-for-3 in that game, and five Sewanee pitchers combined on a three-hitter. Demkowicz scored two runs and batted in one in Sewanee's loss, while Carter Huffman and Max Murray each was 2-for-4 and had two RBIs and one.
