Area sports notes: Softball Mocs win two in Clearwater

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team began an 11-game trip to Clearwater, Florida, with two one-run wins Friday and is 16-3 for the season. The Mocs edged Western Michigan University 2-1 and Central Connecticut State University 5-4 in nine innings in the USF Under Armour Invitational. UTC freshman Mariah Ramirez, honored this week as the Southern Conference pitcher of the month for February, raised her record to 6-0 with a five-hitter against WMU, when Emma Sturdivant and Halie Williamson each was 2-for-3. Williamson singled in Sturdivant in the fourth inning after Aly Walker - who had walked - scored the tying run on a passed ball. Against CCSU the Mocs scored single runs in the first, fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth innings, that last one on a two-out single by Hayleigh Weissenbach that made a winner of relief pitcher Celie Hudson (6-3). She allowed only one hit and an unearned run in her 4 2/3 innings. Weissenbach was 2-for-3 and Kacie Lynch also had two hits for the Mocs, who play Central Florida and Holy Cross on Saturday. Ramirez was 4-0 with a save and a 2.28 earned run average in February.

» Chattanooga's King's Men/Athletic Shop slowpitch softball team began its 2019 season last weekend with a fourth-place finish out of 10 teams in the open division of the WSL Icebreaker in McMinnville. The King's Men won 12-8 over New Rivalz of Crossville, who responded with seven victories to win the tournament. The King's Men lost 19-16 to Cookeville's LP Sports, which finished second, and 21-13 in a rematch with New Rivalz, who won the 2018 NSA state championship as Bad Karma. Garrett Reagan represented the King's Men on the all-tournament team after going 11-for-14 (.786) with five home runs. Heath Barnes was 11-for-15, Rodney Smith and Chris Brown each 8-for-11, Seth Swader 7-for-11 and Austen Jackson and Stephen Graham each 9-for-15.

Baseball

» In a USA South baseball game moved up to 10 a.m. to beat the weather Friday in Danville, Virginia, Averett edged Covenant 2-1 on a two-out wild pitch in the ninth inning. Alex Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with the RBI for Covenant (7-5, 2-1), and starting pitcher Matt Reitz allowed only seven hits and an unearned run in seven innings.

Fishing

» Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia, and Miles Burghoff of Hixson are among the 30 anglers who made the cut for Saturday's semifinal round in the FLW Tour bass tournament on Lake Seminole in South Carolina. Gross, who already has won a tour event this year, was 21st after two rounds with 28 pounds, 7 ounces, and Burghoff was 23rd with 27-15. Gross caught 21-4 on Friday. The leader was Bradford Beavers of Summerville, South Carolina, with 43-14.

Golf

» Lee University's Connor Pollman was honored as the Gulf South Conference men's freshman golfer of the month for February. He closed strong in tying for 34th in the Saint Leo Invitational in Dade City, Florida, with rounds of 80, 74 and 71. The Flames will play Sunday through Tuesday in the Southeastern Collegiate hosted by Valdosta State.

Tennis

» The Lee tennis teams both are 7-2 after completing 3-0 spring-break trips to Florida with 5-2 wins Thursday against Findlay. Those followed 7-0 (men) and 6-1 defeats of Hampton on Wednesday. Against Findlay, Lisa Kirr, Micaela Belen Maiz, Lauren Trammell, Sierra Donaldson, Jesus Garcia, Daniel Prata, Antonio Pons and Cristian Pons all won in both doubles and singles for Lee.

Lacrosse

» Lee lost 23-4 at Saint Leo (6-0) in women's lacrosse Friday. Becca Broadwick had two goals and an assist for Lee (3-4), which was outshot 36-9 and trailed 16-1 at halftime.

» The Sewanee women lost 11-6 in a rainy home match against Kenyon. The score was 5-5 at halftime. Cassie Hudson-Heck scored four goals for Kenyon (4-2), while Anna Comer and Sarah Strand netted two each for Sewanee (6-2). The Tigers' Brianna Young was credited with seven saves.
