Area sports notes: Army, Illinois top UTC wrestlers

Despite a win in each match by 184-pounder Matthew Waddell, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team lost 18-12 to Army and 22-10 to Illinois in the inaugural Chattanooga Duals on Sunday in Maclellan Gym. Army defeated the Illini 19-15. Only one of the Mocs' individual losses included a bonus point, and they got one of their own on Rodney Jones' major decision against Illinois at 197. Tanner Smith and Mason Wallace each won at 149 for UTC (1-2), and Fabian Gutierrez at 125 and Andrew Nicholson at 165 each went 1-1.

Volleyball

* UTC lost 3-1 in Southern Conference play Saturday at UNC Greensboro (10-18, 4-10). It was the 17th consecutive setback for the Mocs (5-22, 0-14). Maia Rackel had 15 kills and six block assists and Dani Szczepanski added 12 kills, while Maddie Halsey had 35 assists and Megan Kaufman totaled 21 digs.

* Lee University lost Friday for the 10th straight time, 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 23-25, 25-13, 15-11) in a Gulf South Conference match at Shorter. Bailey Kress and Abby Stroh downed 15 and 13 kills and Hanna Matthews had 34 assists and 13 digs for Lee (9-20, 2-12). Micaela McMichen had 27 digs, Quinne Daoust eight kills and 12 digs and Hannah Longley 11 digs.

* Sewanee's season ended at 20-10 with a 3-0 loss (25-18, 25-13, 25-17) Saturday to tournament host and No. 1 seed Birmingham-Southern (24-6) in a Southern Athletic Association semifinal. Lilly Reilly had nine kills and 10 digs, Destiny Stewart eight kills, Constance Connolly 19 assists and 11 digs and Sydney White 17 digs for Sewanee. Connolly ended with 2,779 career assists, second most in SAA history, and 1,062 digs.

* The 2019 Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament will begin Wednesday in Kingsport, Tennessee, with eighth seed Kentucky Christian against No. 9 seed Bluefield at 3:30 p.m. and No. 7 seed Truett McConnell University (16-18, 12-9) against 10th-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan University (6-20, 6-14) at 6:30. The TMU-TWU winner will face No. 2 seed Point on Thursday, when one of the other three matches will be No. 5 seed Bryan (20-12, 13-7) against No. 4 seed Union College (18-19, 15-5) at 5 p.m. The tournament ends Saturday. Top-seeded Reinhardt and Point already have berths in the NAIA national tourney; a third will go to the highest other finisher this week.

Basketball

* Bryan's 20th-ranked Lady Lions won 84-68 but the Lions lost 84-63 in AAC play Saturday at St. Andrews. Kaitlynn Hennessee scored 22 points and Destiny Kassner and Shayla Ludy scored 18 each for the Lady Lions (5-0, 2-0). Kassner was 9-for-11 from the field and added four steals, while Deandra Luna had five assists. Michael Cody and AJ Jones each scored 14 points and Isaiah McClain had 10 for the Bryan men (2-2, 1-1).

* Tennessee Wesleyan University swept its AAC doubleheader Saturday at Columbia International, 59-43 in the women's game and 101-98 in two overtimes in the men's. Kenzie Conn and Jordan Wright scored 16 and 15 points for the Lady Bulldogs (1-2, 1-1). Ty Patterson had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Bryant Bernard and Jonathan Webb 19 and 17 points and Jamesio Rhine 10 rebounds for the TWU men, who trailed by 14 at halftime.

* The Sewanee women's team opened its season in the Agnes Scott Classic with a 74-48 loss Friday to Maryville and a 63-45 win Saturday against the host school, and the Tigers' Camryn Broussard made the all-tournament team. She and Kinsley Logan led them in the loss with nine points each, and Broussard had 10 with Logan's and Abby Young's 11 each against Agnes Scott. Ellie Treanton had 10 rebounds in each game and an SAA-record nine steals in the win.

Soccer

* The runner-up Covenant College soccer teams had seven players named USA South all-tournament after Saturday night's finals: forward Josh Brower, midfielders Parker Owen and Jesse Riggs and defender Matt Morefield from the men and Kyra Duble, Lizzy Hightower and Paige Simons from the Lady Scots.
