Area sports notes: Lee University nips Shorter in volleyball

Beginning with a 36-34 first set, Lee University pulled out a 3-2 Gulf South Conference volleyball win Tuesday night against visiting Shorter. The subsequent set scores were 22-25, 29-27, 18-25, 15-11. Quinne Daoust had 14 kills and 13 digs and Abby Stroh had 13 kills with 24 digs and three aces for Lee (9-10, 2-5), which got 37 assists from Hanna Matthews, 31 digs from Micaela McMichen and nine kills from Bailey Kress. Kendall Vondra had 38 assists and 21 digs and Gabrielle Hogle contributed 25 and 14 for Shorter (6-13, 0-7), which had five players with 12 to 14 kills and Emily Wilson with 41 digs.

* The Bryan College volleyball team upset North Division leader Union College 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21) in an Appalachian Athletic Conference match Tuesday evening. Anna Owens and Rebecca Camacho had nine and eight kills while Gigi Ford had seven plus 16 digs for Bryan (16-10, 10-6). Also for the Lady Lions, Rheagan Kean had 33 digs, Sidney Pierce 16 assists, Jaleigh Rogan 13 assists and 17 digs and Anna Cain three aces. Union is 17-15, 14-1 in AAC play.

* NCAA Division III regional power Emory University improved to 17-1 this volleyball season with a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-23, 25-14) Tuesday at Covenant College. Leah Buys had 21 assists and Alexa Spurling had eight kills and five block assists for the Lady Scots (6-13), and Emily Moore led in digs with nine.
