The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team edged visiting Lipscomb on Sunday for the Mocs' third consecutive 1-0 victory after a season-opening 1-1 draw. They also won both their preseason exhibition games 1-0. This time it was sophomore Samantha Shaw who scored the goal, less than two minutes before halftime. Lipscomb (2-2) led 15-14 in shots, 6-4 in shots on goal and 5-4 in corner kicks. Ashton Shields was the UTC goalkeeper and made six saves. Last year the Bisons beat the Mocs 3-0 and went on to win the Atlantic Sun championship.

* The Sewanee men's soccer team dropped to 1-1 in the season-opening Berry Invitational with a 1-0 loss Sunday morning to DePauw. Jay Klein netted a penalty kick just over five minutes into the second half for the Indiana team, which outshot Sewanee 12-5 with a 4-1 edge in attempts on goal.

* The Dalton State men's soccer team concluded Reinhardt's invitational Saturday with a 3-0 defeat of Truett McConnell in which Zachary Perry and Frank Herrera scored in the first half and Amin Saheb Ettabaa provided the insurance goal. Aaron Fraire made four saves for the Roadrunners (2-1), and Justin Riescher and Kevin Villatoro had assists.

Volleyball

* Former Lee University volleyball setter Camil Martinez was on the Dominican Republic team that won the Pan American Games gold medal last month in Lima, Peru. The Dominicans beat Brazil in the semifinals and Colombia in the final. Martinez played in 2012 and 2013 for Lee after two years at Gulf Coast State University and totaled 1,024 assists and 294 digs for the Lady Flames. The 2012 team won 31 matches, including two in the NAIA national tournament, and the 2013 squad reached the Christian college national semifinals as Lee began its transition from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Martinez was a National Christian College Athletic Association All-American. "I can only describe Camil as a breath of sunshine when she arrived to play for our team," 29th-year Lee coach Andrea Hudson said in a release last week. "She had already had a great career at a Division I university, and we were needing someone to help us run the type of offense we were hoping to run. Camil's smile and enthusiasm was infectious, and her skills were definitely that of a seasoned international player. We even let her leave in the middle of her senior season to play in the U23 championships in Tijuana, Mexico, where her Dominican Republic team won the silver medal." Said Martinez: "My two years at Lee are by far my favorite college memories, as a student and as a volleyball player. Andrea and Kevin (Hudson, Andrea's husband and assistant coach) made me a better player and, in the process, made me a better person. They gave me a stronger foundation and allowed me to understand the game at a deeper level, realizing how important it is to commit to a drill and respect and care for your teammates."

* Avery Hilliard had nine kills with a .421 attack percentage and Marjorie Smith added eight kills in Tennessee Wesleyan University's 3-0 home volleyball loss Saturday to the University of the Cumberlands. The set scores were 25-16, 25-14, 25-22. Also for TWU (0-5), Kalyse Garrett had 14 assists and Emma-Rae Adams had 12 digs.

Softball

* Another player from the local ProStar Fastpitch program has committed to play softball in college, this one being East Paulding High School junior catcher Aly Salois. She chose Erskine in South Carolina. ProStar CEO Steve Chattin noted in a release that Salois "has aged out" of his program but "has been a pleasure to coach." He added, "Aly is definitely the QB of the team behind the plate. Her defensive mechanics and her arm are outstanding. She is a rock of strength and leadership at the catching position. While Aly is a great power hitter now, I feel her potential is off the charts. Her understanding of her swing and her approach at the plate has improved every year in our program."
