Area sports notes: Eamon Zayed's late score helps Red Wolves draw at Toronto

Eamon Zayed's goal in the 83rd minute gave the Chattanooga Red Wolves Soccer Club a 2-2 road draw against Toronto FC II in a USL League One match Friday afternoon. The 35-year-old Zayed rejoined the starting 11 and now has six goals for the season. Captain Steven Beattie netted his ninth to even the score at 1 after Tony Walls drew a penalty in the box early in the second half. The Red Wolves are 8-7-9 and are in fourth place with 33 points with four matches left in the regular season. They play at Lansing Ignite next Saturday and host Orlando City B on Sept. 21, the Richmond Kickers on Sept. 28 and Toronto on Oct. 5.

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team lost 2-1 at Georgia State on Friday, with Liz Fogarty and Jimena Cabrera scoring for the Panthers (3-2) in the 60th and 69th minutes and UTC's Bailey Gale halving the deficit in the 72nd. Georgia State had slight edges of 11-10 in shots and 6-4 in shots on goal. The Mocs (3-1-1) host Alabama at 1 p.m. Sunday at the UTC Sports Complex next to Engel Stadium, and admission is free.

* The Covenant College men's soccer side beat Berry 2-0 in the Scots' home game Friday night in Sewanee's Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational, as Josh Brower assisted on Mercer Stout's first-half goal and scored from a Parker Owen assist in the 54th minute. Paul Lemay made three saves in the shutout; Covenant outshot the visitors 13-8, but the on-goal count was 3-3.

* Sewanee hosts Covenant at 5:30 p.m. EDT Saturday in the Rote Invitational after edging Eastern Mennonite 1-0 on Friday night. The score came very late, at 87:38, unassisted from Tashinga Vhumisai, but his Tigers (2-1) had margins of 14-5 in overall shots and 7-2 in attempts on frame. James Murray recorded a two-save shutout.

* Tennessee Wesleyan rolled to a 7-1 victory over Talladega in NAIA men's soccer Friday in Oxford, Alabama. The Bulldogs are 5-1.

Golf

* UTC was 13th at 306, two shots behind Tennessee in 12th, after the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate men's golf tournament Friday at The Farm in Rocky Face, Georgia. Virginia was 14th at 310. Georgia Tech was first at 4-under-par 284 with North Florida at 290, Clemson at 292, South Florida at 293, South Carolina at 295 and Alabama sixth at 296. South Carolina's Jamie Wilson and Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans shared the individual lead at 4-under 68, and Clemson freshman Carter Pendley from Dalton was tied for seventh at 72. UTC's Will Porter was tied for 25th at 74; teammates A.J. Lintunen and Moritz Lammel had 77s, and Matt Smith shot 78 in his first round as a Moc.

Volleyball

* UTC was 0-2 Friday in the Troy Invitational, with a 3-1 loss (21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-8) to Murray State and a 3-0 setback (25-15, 25-13, 25-19) against the host Trojans. Brianna Anderson led the Mocs (2-4) in kills against the Racers with seven, while Megan Kaufman had 14 digs and Bailey Bennett had 10 assists. Gylian Finch had six kills against Troy (3-0).

* Sewanee lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-19) to Otterbein at Illinois Wesleyan's tournament but bounced back with a 3-2 win over the 24th-ranked hosts. Destiny Stewart and Lilly Reilly each had eight kills for the Tigers (3-3) against Otterbein, while Anna Ball had 24 digs and Constance Connolly contributed 17 assists and 12 digs.

* Covenant dropped to 0-4 this season with a 3-0 loss (25-9, 25-7, 25-17) to Transylvania in the Berry National Invitational tournament Friday. Covenant got 15 digs from Leah Buys, 10 assists from Emily Moore and three aces from Riley Howe.

* Cleveland State lost 3-2 at home to the Reinhardt junior varsity on Friday, with the set scores 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 20-25.
