Area sports notes: UTC ties Alabama in women's soccer

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's soccer team tied Alabama 1-1 on Sunday afternoon at the UTC Sports Complex. Nealy Martin scored for the Crimson Tide (3-2-1) 12 minutes into the second half, but Samantha Shaw got the Mocs (3-1-2) even from a Bailey Gale pass in the 78th minute. The Tide had a 16-4 margin in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks but a mere 4-3 edge in shots on goal. UTC keeper Abbey Saddler made three saves, all in overtime.

* The Chattanooga Football Club played the host Milwaukee Torrent to a 1-1 draw in a National Premier Soccer League Members Cup match Saturday night. Joao Costa had CFC's goal in the 60th minute; Milwaukee tied the score in the 86th. CFC is now 1-2-2 in the Members Cup and in third place in the six-team standings with five matches to play. CFC's next match is at 6 p.m. Saturday against Napa Valley 1839 FC at Finley Stadium.

* A Hanover penalty kick in the 25th minute held up for a 1-0 Panthers win at Sewanee in NCAA Division III soccer Sunday. Hanna Judycki made five saves and Abigail Frazier added three in 45 minutes each in goal for the host Tigers (0-2-1), who had a 16-14 edge in shots.

* Bryan College lost 5-0 in NAIA men's soccer Saturday night at third-ranked William Carey, which scored three goals in the first 12 minutes, and the Bryan Lady Lions fell 4-0 at Cumberlands. The Patriots (4-0-1) took 19 shots to three for the Bryan women (1-3), with a 10-1 margin in attempts on goal. Despite the even more one-sided men's score, the Lions (0-3-1) outshot the undefeated Mississippi team 15-13 and trailed only 8-6 in shots on goal.

* Dalton State College won its fourth consecutive men's soccer match Saturday, 2-0 over visiting Milligan, as Santiago Moore scored from a Taeylor Fish creation late in the first half and Noah Thomas scored late in the second. Aaron Fraire made five saves in his third shutout of the season for DSC (4-1).

Golf

* A final-round 292 gave Georgia Tech a 20-stroke victory at 861 Sunday in the 15-team Carpet Capital Collegiate golf tournament at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Georgia, and a 293 jumped UTC 12 shots ahead of Virginia into 13th place at 906. Charlotte, East Tennessee and North Florida tied for second in the team standings, and Alabama and South Carolina shared fifth at 883. Tennessee was ninth at 893. UTC's A.J. Lintunen closed with a 69 and tied for 25th individually at 222, and Matt Smith (71) and Moritz Lammel (75) also made the top 50 at 226 and 228. Will Porter (79) finished at 231 and Oliver Simonsen (78) at 239. Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans was the medalist by five strokes with a 9-under-par 207.

Running

* Led by freshman Kathryn Vradenburgh as the individual winner and her junior sister Kay in fourth place, the Dalton State women's cross country team had seven top-13 finishers - its full squad - and won the Middle Georgia Invitational meet Saturday in Macon. NCAA Division I member Georgia State was second. The Lady Roadrunners' Alex Gass and Rachel Ward were sixth and seventh, and Mari Morales, Ana Karen Padilla and Kate Roberts were ninth, 10th and 13th.

Volleyball

* Sewanee completed a 2-1 showing in Illinois Wesleyan University's volleyball tournament with a 3-1 win over Millikin on Saturday. The set scores were 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-15. Lilly Reilly had 13 kills, 16 digs and four aces for the Tigers (4-3), who got 11 kills from Stephanie Price, 10 kills and 20 digs from Destiny Stewart, nine kills from Sydney White, 38 assists and 13 digs from Constance Connolly and 18 digs from Anna Ball. In Friday night's 3-2 defeat of 24th-ranked IWU, Stewart had 19 kills and 14 digs, White 15 kills and 22 digs, Reilly 10 kills and 18 digs, Price 10 kills, Connolly 47 assists and 12 digs and Ball 25 digs.

Field Hockey

* Sewanee is 0-3 in field hockey after losing 1-0 Saturday at Wittenberg and 2-0 Sunday at Earlham. Both Quakers goals came in the third quarter.
