Area sports notes: Covenant overwhelms Berea in men's soccer

Covenant College improved to 4-0-1 in men's soccer with a 3-0 home win Wednesday in its USA South opener against Berea. All the scoring was in the first 23 minutes - a goal by Josh Brower and two by Mercer Stout from Brower assists - and the Scots secured a saveless shutout as they had margins of 35-3 in shots and 17-0 in shots on goal. Luis Macias made 14 saves for Berea (3-5, 0-3).

* The Division III Sewanee women lost 5-3 Wednesday night at Division II Alabama-Huntsville. Addie Roemershauser scored twice and Isabel Washko netted the third goal for Sewanee (1-4-1), and Abbie Kleckley had an assist. UAH is 2-2-1.

* Bryan College routed new Appalachian Athletic Conference member Kentucky Christian 5-0 in women's soccer and 9-0 in men's soccer Wednesday in Dayton. All five Lady Lions goals came in the second half, Makena Giles bookending scores by Rylee Evans, Abby Sweatman and Anna Sanders. Sanders assisted on Giles' first score, and Anna-Blair Fish had two assists. They outshot the visitors 27-2, 11-1 on goal, and the Bryan men's margins were 41-2 and 24-1. Jonathan Ricketts scored the Lions' first goal at 13:44 from a double-assist by Lucas Mattos and Aaron Attree, who each scored two goals. Brad Spooner, Josh Cash, Jake Poulakis and Haaris Hussain also scored.

* Tennessee Wesleyan won 2-1 in AAC men's soccer Tuesday at Truett McConnell on Kyle Wynne's goal from a George Green assist eight minutes into overtime. Montel McKenzie had given the Bulldogs (7-1, 2-0) a 1-0 lead from a Ben Timms assist in the 61st minute, and they led 16-9 in shots and 7-2 in on-goal chances. The Lady Bulldogs (4-2, 1-1) had two 6-0 wins last weekend but lost 2-0 at Truett McConnell despite an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.

Golf

* The NAIA's fourth-ranked Dalton State College women's team began its 2019-20 season with a third-place 901 Monday and Tuesday at the Sand Shark Invitational in Okatie, South Carolina. No. 2 Keiser and No. 3 SCAD-Savannah were first and second at 880 and 894. DSC freshman Sydney Hermann, the 2019 Oklahoma Class 6A high school state champion, was third individually and all-tournament with a 221, and Hannah Gasaway also made the top 10 with a 225. Cameron Daniel, Haejin Choe, Megan Donahue and Isabel Rijos shot 229, 230, 231 and 232.

* Dalton State senior Ben Rebne from Heritage High School was designated the Southern States Athletic Conference men's golfer of the week for the fourth time in his career after his 4-under-par medalist performance in the team's Memphis Shootout win.

Cross country

* Four Lee University runners and Kathryn Vradenburgh from Dalton State were conference cross country weekly honorees for their performances in the UTC Twilight Meet last Friday. Vradenburgh, a freshman, was the SSAC women's runner of the week for the second time after finishing 11th out of 89 runners in the 4-kilometer race that included all three NCAA divisions and the NJCAA as well as the NAIA. Lee won both races, and 7k victor Will Stone and 4k runner-up Chloe Flora were the Gulf South runners of the week with teammates Elias Sandifer (seventh) and Hannah Spooneybarger (fifth) chosen GSC freshmen of the week.

Volleyball

* Bryan lost 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-16) in AAC play Tuesday at Union College in Kentucky, which is 5-0 in the league. Anna Owens had seven kills and Rheagan Kean had 21 digs to lead the Lady Lions (9-5, 4-2), and Jaleigh Rogan had 11 assists.

* Milligan College setter Kellee Geren from Cleveland produced 36 assists, eight kills on .800 hitting and 15 digs in a 3-1 AAC victory (23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-19) Tuesday at Tennessee Wesleyan. Marjorie Smith had 14 kills, 13 digs and three aces for Tennessee Wesleyan (1-9, 1-4), which got 30 assists and nine digs from Kalyse Garrett, eight kills and four aces from Miyah Woodard and nine block solos and two block assists from Avery Hilliard.

* Cleveland State won 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-13) on the road Wednesday against the Bryan junior varsity.
