Area sports notes: UTC men's golfers finish eighth in UAB tournament

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's golfers finished eighth out of 19 teams Tuesday in UAB's Graeme McDowell Invitational at Birmingham's Greystone Golf & Country Club. The Mocs' Connor Nolan tied for 17th individually at even-par 216, and Will Porter tied for 27th at 219. Moritz Lammel and Matt Smith shot 227 and 228. North Florida was the team winner at 850, one shot better than UAB with Arkansas State third at 854. UTC's total was 885 with a closing 296.

* Led by a ninth-place, 3-under-par 210 by freshman Beck Burnette and a 17th-sharing 213 by senior Evan Spence, the Lee University men's golf team tied fifth in the loaded Cougar Invitational hosted Monday and Tuesday by Columbus State. With their 1-over aggregate 853 for 54 holes, the Flames outdid NCAA Division II's No. 2 Barry, No. 5 Lincoln Memorial, No. 8 Florida Tech, No. 16 Limestone and No. 18 Carson-Newman and tied No. 21 CSU. Georgia Southwestern won in a playoff with No. 4 Florida Southern after each ended with an 848, and No. 1 Lynn and No. 12 Saint Leo were third and fourth at 849 and 852. Lee's Connor Pollman, Scott Odell and Dylan Lillard shot 218, 219 and 220.

Soccer

* Two second-half goals by Jared McWhorter gave Lee University a 2-0 men's soccer victory Tuesday night against visiting Barry and a 4-1-1 season record. Eemeli Makela assisted on the first score at 55:53. Each team had six saves.

* Emory University's women's soccer team, ranked No. 25 in NCAA Division III, scored three and a half minutes into Tuesday's game at Covenant and went on to a 6-0 win over the Lady Scots. The score was 2-0 at halftime, when Lucy Sandhoff had made eight of her nine saves for Covenant (1-4-1). The Eagles (5-1) had a 28-3 margin in shots, 17-2 on goal.

* Dalton State's women lost 3-0 at Cumberland, No. 23 in the NAIA, and is 4-3. The Phoenix (7-2-1) outshot DSC 22-3 with a 13-3 edge in on-goal attempts. Mattie Dollar had 10 saves in defeat.

Volleyball

* Lee University lost 3-0 in its Gulf South Conference volleyball opener Tuesday night against visiting West Georgia but got 15 and 13 kills from Quinne Daoust and Abby Stroh, 31 assists and 11 digs from Hanna Matthews and 15 digs from Micaela McMichen. Bailey Kress added seven kills for Lee (6-5).
