Sewanee junior Wesley Porter was selected the Tennessee Sports Writers Association college football defensive player of the week for the state even after a 49-30 loss at the Division III level, but he had a spectacular performance last Saturday against Birmingham-Southern. The defensive back made five solo tackles and assisted on another, and he intercepted two passes. He picked off one deep in Sewanee territory on the first possession of the game, and he turned his fourth-quarter pickoff into a 58-yard touchdown return. The Tigers play Saturday at Rhodes in Memphis in the annual Orgill Cup game.

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will host Western Carolina at 4 p.m. Saturday for homecoming and its Southern Conference opener, and due to above-average temperatures being predicted, each specator will be allowed to bring in one sealed clear plastic water bottle with its twist-cap seal clearly intact. Broken seals or reusable bottles will not be allowed into Finley Stadium.

Soccer

* The Tennessee Wesleyan women won 3-2 and the men played to a 3-3 draw in their Appalachian Athletic Conference soccer games Wednesday at Reinhardt. Chloe Rootes netted all three goals for the Lady Bulldogs (6-2, 3-1), all before Adrien Merrilles scored the first of her two for Reinhardt (4-4-1, 2-1-1). Kelly Morine had seven saves for TWU. Aaron Whitten gave RU's men (3-4-1, 2-1-1) a 2-0 lead in the first 18:19, but the Bulldogs (7-1-2, 2-0-1) equalized on a Kyle Wynne goal at 32:07 and went ahead on a Josh Conradie goal from a Ben Timms assist at 51:50. The Eagles retied it at 76:46.

* Bryan College beat the Union College women 4-1 but bowed 4-0 to the Union men in AAC soccer Wednesday in Kentucky. Makena Giles scored twice in the first 19 minutes and Rylee Evans made it 3-0 just before halftime for the Lady Lions (5-4, 4-0). They were assisted by Anna Sanders, Arielle Hansford and Jessica Chaveiro, and Giles later provided an assist for Kylie Murphy, who had scored the goal in Saturday's 1-0 win at Columbia International. Caragan Treola made five saves against Union. Union's men (5-4, 4-0) broke a scoreless tie 12 minutes into the second half and outshot the Lions (3-4-1, 3-1) 18-9.

* Emory scored two second-half goals and won 2-1 in NCAA Division III men's soccer Wednesday night at Sewanee. That made the Eagles 4-3-1 and dropped the Tigers to 5-2-1. Sewanee scored in the 39th minute off a free kick, Rhodes Hall finishing Severin Velasco's pass into the box. Goalkeeper James Murray ended a stretch of 321 scoreless minutes but made seven saves.

* For her five goals in two games last week, Sewanee freshman forward Addie Roemershauser was the TSWA college women's soccer player of the week. She scored two of the Tigers' three against Division II's Alabama-Huntsville and half of their six against Agnes Scott.

Golf

* The Tennessee Wesleyan men's golfers led by 13 strokes after the first round and finished second by two to Cumberland in the nine-team tournament hosted Monday and Tuesday by Bryan College at Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain. Led by medalist Gavin Roberson at 142, TWU shot 599 (288-311). Cleveland State was fifth at 626; Bryan was seventh at 638. TWU's Tanner Dowland and Cleveland State's Wes Spillers tied for 10th individually with 151 - a Cougars record for Spillers - and the Bulldogs' John Houk and Simon Nagy tied for 13th and 17th at 152 and 154. Bryan's Kevin Knudsen tied for 15th at 153.
