Area sports notes: Lee runners shine in Division II Showcase

With three runners in the top four and eight in the top 14 overall, the 11th-ranked Lee University women's cross country team won the Trevecca Nazarene Division II Showcase meet Saturday morning in Nashville. Ten schools were included, and the 16th-ranked Lee men finished third behind No. 8 Southern Indiana and No. 20 Charleston (West Virginia) and one spot ahead of No. 10 UC-Colorado Springs. Celine Ritter won the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race in 17 minutes and 37 seconds, and Chloe Flora and Charlee Boxall were third and fourth for the Lady Flames, who had 24 points to 35 for No. 12 Southern Indiana with UNC Pembroke third with 102. Lee's Hannah Spooneybarger was seventh with Toni Moore ninth. In the men's 8k, Lee was just five points out of first place with Casey Guthery seventh individually and Will Stone, Caleb Eagleson, Ben Tabor and Thomas Kelton 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th.

* Baylor School dominated the girls' race in the McCallie Invitational cross country meet Saturday at Woodland Park Baptist Church with six finishers in the top 15. Led by runner-up Helen Webb in 20:21 for the 5k, the Lady Red Raiders totaled 38 points compared to 84 for Girls Preparatory School. Chattanooga Christian (101), Heritage (110) and Walker Valley (173) completed the top five. Baylor's Emmy Davis and Hannah Rosser were fifth and sixth individually with Ellie Myers, Janie Pippenger and Addison Johnson 13th through 15th.

Soccer

* Devin Healy scored three goals in the first 11:08 and Riley Engels and Emma Higgins made it 5-0 by halftime as the fifth-ranked Lee University women's soccer team opened Gulf South Conference play with a 5-0 home win Saturday night against Shorter. The Lady Flames (5-1) got assists from Engels, her sister Avery, Kelsey Yoder and Riley Henry in outshooting the Lady Hawks (0-6) 37-4 - 19-4 in shots on goal. The Lee men (5-1-1, 1-0) won 2-1 at Shorter on Jared McWhorter's 30-yard free kick in overtime. Caden Corrao headed in a corner kick by Eemeli Makeli in the 30th minute for Lee, but Jan Gruhn tied it for Shorter (4-2, 0-1) in the 88th at the end of a half of heavy Hawks pressure.

* The Covenant soccer teams did their part for homecoming Saturday with USA South wins of 6-0 over the Methodist men and 2-0 over the Brevard women. Kyra Duble and Paige Simons scored from assists by Kailey Burrell and Addy Cronan for the Lady Scots (2-4-1, 1-0), who had margins of 23-6 in shots and 9-1 in shots on goal. For the Scots (8-0-1, 5-0), Mercer Stout scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season in the first 14 minutes, unassisted, and Austin Berry, Jake Major, Anthony Calbo and Jack Allen also scored. Parker Owen, Aaron Riggs and Calbo had assists, and Paul Lemay made four saves.

* The Bryan College women's soccer team lost Saturday for the first time in five Appalachian Athletic Association matches, 3-1 at Truett McConnell, and the Bryan men are 3-1-1, 3-4-2 overall, after tying TMU 3-3. The Lady Lions are 5-5 overall.

Volleyball

* Covenant opened USA South volleyball competition Saturday with a 3-2 home win (25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-12) over Berea and a 3-0 loss (25-17, 25-12, 25-10) to Maryville. Leah Buys had 41 assists and 10 digs and Emily Moore registered 26 digs in the win for Covenant (2-11), which got nine kills apiece from Alexa Spurling and Allie Jakes and eight kills with 19 digs from Riley Howe. Buys had 16 assists against Maryville (10-6, 2-0).

* Bryan is 7-2 in the AAC and 13-6 overall after 3-2 comeback wins Friday at Columbia International (21-25, 25-13, 19-25, 25-12, 15-11) and Saturday at St. Andrews (16-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, 15-9). Against CIU, Anna Owens had 19 kills, Gigi Ford 12 kills and 14 digs, Rheagan Kean 28 digs and three aces and Jaleigh Rogan 22 assists and 11 digs.

Football

* Sewanee lost 14-3 to Sewanee on Saturday in Memphis. The visiting Tigers scored on a 51-yard field goal by Brody Palmer barely two minutes into the Southern Athletic Association game, but Rhodes (1-3, 1-1) immediately went 75 yards in 10 plays for the go-ahead touchdown and scored again early in the second quarter. Palmer's long kick followed a fumbled punt, and Sewanee (0-4, 0-2) netted only 182 yards of offense. The Tigers had a field-goal attempt blocked and an apparent touchdown return by Walker Weatherly of one they blocked negated by a penalty. Wesley Porter blocked that kick, totaled seven tackles and had 106 return yards on special teams. Jackson Menefee and Jack Lambert each had 12 tackles.
