Area sports notes: Soccer Mocs fall to Furman in overtime

Furman pulled out a 1-0 overtime victory over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Southern Conference women's soccer Sunday afternoon at the UTC Sports Complex. Kyndal Anderson scored the golden goal at the 94:27 mark from a Jasmine Greene pass for the Paladins (6-4-1, 1-0-1). The Mocs (6-3-2, 1-1) had slight edges in overall shots and shots on goal of 10-9 and 4-3. Their next four games are away from home, beginning Friday night at Western Carolina.

* The Lee University men's soccer team won its Gulf South Conference opener 2-1 Saturday night at Shorter on Jared McWhorter's 30-yard free kick in overtime. Caden Corrao headed in a corner kick by Eemeli Makeli in the 30th minute for Lee (5-1-1, 1-0), but Jan Gruhn tied it for Shorter (4-2, 0-1) in the 88th at the end of a half of heavy Hawks pressure.

* The Sewanee soccer teams began Southern Athletic Association play Saturday at home with a 2-1 overtime defeat of the Berry men (5-4-1) and an overtime scoreless draw against the Berry women (5-2-2). Hanna Judycki had three saves for the female Tigers (2-4-2). James Murray had eight for the Sewanee men (6-2-1), who were outshot 23-14 but got a first-half goal from Andile Tshuma, assisted by Ethan Dutka, and the winner at 98:08 from Bryan Franklin, assisted by Alpo Sipila.

* Dalton State College began Southern States Athletic Conference soccer competition Saturday at home with a 3-1 win over Middle Georgia State's men but a 3-0 loss to the Lady Knights. The Roadrunners (8-1-1), who play Tuesday night at Sewanee, scored all their goals in the first half - by Frank Herrera, Justin Riescher and Taeylor Fisch, with Riescher assisting on the other two. Santiago Moore and Kevin Villatoro also had DSC assists. The Knights (5-5) scored in the 72nd minute with the hosts playing a man down after a red card. DSC's shots margin was only 13-11, but the gap was 9-5 in attempts on goal. Middle Georgia's women (8-2) scored in the fourth minute and led 2-0 at halftime. The Lady Roadrunners are 4-4.

Football

* Austin Peay senior quarterback JaVaughn Craig from Chattanooga and McCallie School was selected an Ohio Valley Conference football co-offensive player of the week, along with Tennessee Tech quarterback Bailey Fisher. Craig completed 15 of 21 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns - covering 72 and 48 yards - and ran for 30 yards and three more TDs in the Governors' 52-33 upset of 11th-ranked Jacksonville State. That ended a 12-game losing streak to the Gamecocks for Austin Peay, and Craig's 13 career rushing TDs are tied for the most for a QB in Govs history.

Volleyball

* Sewanee's volleyball Tigers won 3-1 (25-11, 24-26, 25-13, 25-23) Sunday in an SAA match at Oglethorpe after being edged 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 25-16, 21-25, 15-13) Saturday at nationally seventh-ranked Berry. Against Berry (12-3, 3-1), Destiny Stewart had 15 kills and 11 digs, Lilly Reilly 12 kills and 14 digs, Constance Connolly 29 assists and 13 digs and Sydney White 15 digs. Sunday in Atlanta, the Tigers (10-5, 3-2) got 14 kills and 17 digs from Stewart, 39 assists from Connolly, 11 kills from Lydia Goffi, 22 digs and four aces from White and four aces also from Reilly.

Field Hockey

* The Sewanee field hockey team lost 2-1 Saturday at Bridgewater (2-8) and 4-1 Sunday at Roanoke College. Senior Ceara Caffrey scored both goals for the Tigers (2-5), giving her nine for the season and 50 for her college career - fourth most in SAA history and two off the record. Barbara Canty had 10 saves Saturday.

Golf

* The Sewanee women's golfers tied Emory for seventh place at 643 in the 12-team Montgomery (Alabama) Country Club Women's Intercollegiate tournament this past weekend. Centre won at 600, and the next four teams are ranked in the top 13 of NCAA Division III. Sewanee sophomore Margaret Wentz finished 17th individually at 157, one stroke ahead of teammate K.C. Bell, and Caroline Cole shot 162.
