Area sports notes: YCAP's T.J. Arnold wins Silver Gloves national title

Lookout Valley junior T.J. Arnold won a National Silver Gloves boxing championship Saturday night in Kansas City, Missouri. A member of the Chattanooga YMCA's YCAP team, Arnold earned the 15-16-year-old 119-pound title. He received a bye in Thursday's round and defeated Chicago's Jovanni Calderon in the semifinals and Abel Mejia of Corona, California, in the final. Arnold and a Nashville fighter were the only national champions from Tennessee.

Tennis

* The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches with two victories Sunday in Birmingham, 5-1 at UAB and 9-0 over Division III program Birmingham-Southern. UTC (6-1) lost all three doubles matches and fell behind 1-0 to the Blazers but won at Nos. 1-5 singles for its first team triumph in the series since 1988. Jeffrey Dewald won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, No. 1 Niklas Gerdes and No. 5 Simon Bustamante each won 6-4, 6-4, and the Mocs' other two wins were even tougher. Kerim Hyatt prevailed 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), and Tomas Rodriguez won 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8). Hyatt's 6-3, 6-1 breeze was the closest of UTC's six singles wins against BSC: Gerdes, Dewald, Jacob Marshall, Luke Plaisted and Kaisei Kuroki had a 60-2 margin in games.

* Lee University began its spring-semester tennis season with a 5-2 women's win and a 4-3 men's loss Saturday against Carson-Newman at the Knoxville Racquet Club. Lee won all six doubles matches. Singles and doubles winners for the Lady Flames were Lisa Kirr, Micaela Belen Maiz, Sierra Donaldson and Lauren Trammell, and Jesus Garcia at No. 1 singles and Cristian Pons at No. 4 doubled up for the Lee men.

Baseball

* Lee closed out a three-game sweep of its opening baseball series of 2020 with a 15-7 victory Sunday over visiting Urbana. Lee pitchers gave up 14 hits but totaled 14 strikeouts, and the Flames had two four-run innings and a five-run eighth. Alan Smith had a two-run home run and a two-RBI single, Luke Hughes also smashed a two-run homer, Justen Freeman hit a two-run double and leadoff man Thomas Zazzaro was 2-for-4 with a walk, three stolen bases, two RBIs and four runs scored. Joshua Perez was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

* Cleveland State likewise completed a 3-0 season-opening home series sweep with a win Sunday, 11-1 over Southwest Virginia. The Cougars scored 10 runs in the first two innings, and Bryce Jenkins was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two scored. Courtney Payne was 2-for-3 with one RBI, Cooper Roberts had two RBIs and Parker Hill stole three bases. Jonathan Hickman struck out eight batters in his three innings.

Softball

* Lee's softball team followed two season-opening wins Saturday with two losses Sunday at the Gulf Shores Invitational, 8-1 to Lubbock Christian and 3-2 to Union University. Zoe Miller had two hits against Lubbock Christian, and Taylor DeAdder had a two-run single against Union after winning pitcher Gabby Morris gave the Bulldogs a quick lead with a three-run homer in the first inning. Lulu Vasquez threw a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts in defeat.

Basketball

* Sewanee defeated the visiting Birmingham-Southern women 67-62 but lost the men's game 71-67 in Southern Athletic Association basketball Sunday. Ellie Treanton scored 18 points for the female Tigers (10-12, 5-6). Adrian Thomas had 27 plus eight rebounds for the Sewanee men (10-12, 4-7).

* Cleveland State's women improved to 14-6 and 10-2 in the TCCAA with an 81-66 win Saturday at Southwest Tennessee, but the men lost 73-72 on a last-second tip-in. Za'kkria Robinson had 23 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for the Lady Cougars, who got 20 points with six 3s and 11 assists from Asjah Harrell, 12 points from Kyeshia Dalton and 10 points and eight rebounds from Britnay Gore. For the Cougars (8-13, 5-7), Demonte Person had 17 points and six assists, Jager Dickson 15 points and eight rebounds and Torian Day 14 points.
