James Mitchell set a Covenant College record Wednesday night with 10 3-point baskets, and his career-high 30 points led the Scots to an 80-71 USA South home win over Piedmont.
Will Crumly had 15 points and nine rebounds and Chris Barnette contributed 13 points and seven rebounds for Covenant (14-8, 11-4), and Jared Jauch had nine assists. Mitchell's NCAA-era Scots record came on 16 shots, all from 3-point distance.
The Covenant women lost 98-54 in their USAS game at Maryville (16-7, 9-5) and dropped to 9-15, 6-9. Hannah Monday had 15 points, 13 rebounds (eight offensive) and four steals in defeat, and Margo Koby scored 14 points.
Rodley Adjei had 25 points and five assists and Kevon Tucker scored 22 points with four 3s as Dalton State's Roadrunners, ranked third in NAIA Division I, stretched their program-record winning streak to 17 games with an 83-75 nonconference victory Wednesday night at Fisk. Also for DSC (24-1), C.J. Perry scored 16 with four 3s and Dauson Womack had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Tucker is the reigning player of the week in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
The Bryan College teams both won in their Appalachian Athletic Conference home doubleheader Wednesday, 85-63 in the women's game and 79-72 in the men's, and junior guard Deandra Luna surpassed 1,ooo points for her Lions career. She recently reached 500 assists and had seven of those with 14 points. Karli Combs was 6-of-9 on 3s and led 16th-ranked Bryan (25-1, 21-0) with 22 points, while Kaitlynn Hennessee scored 16 and Destiny Kassner had 11 plus seven rebounds. Sarah Cain had four steals and four assists.
Brandon Thomas had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Bryan men (13-13, 12-10), and Isaiah McClain scored 15 points, KJ Hawkins scored 10 and Justin Warner had eight rebounds.
Chattanooga State's men won 78-70 after the Lady Tigers won 82-63 in Wednesday's TCCAA games at Roane State. The second-place Lady Tigers (20-5, 11-3) have won 17 of their last 18 games. The Tigers are 9-14, 6-8.
Jaquez Hicks had 26 points and 11 rebounds and Jakobey Hitchens scored 13 points for Cleveland State, but the Cougars (9-14, 6-8) lost 68-60 to visiting Motlow State in TCCAA play Wednesday. The Lady Cougars (14-9, 10-5) also lost to Motlow (7-18, 6-10), 81-66, but got 15 points from Za'kkria Robinson, 14 from Asjah Harrell and 12 plus 12 rebounds from Charisma Barner.
