Area sports notes: Lee softball team rolls past West Georgia

Lee University salvaged one victory in its league-opening softball series, winning 6-1 over visiting West Georgia in their Gulf South Conference game Sunday. Taylor De Adder was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and Lily Hatcher was 1-for-2 and matched De Adder with two runs and two stolen bases for Lee (5-4, 1-2). Lulu Vasquez allowed four hits and no runs with five strikeouts in five innings, and Grace Leslie pitched the last two with two strikeouts.

* Bryan College began its softball season Saturday with 6-3 and 9-1 losses at Bethel University. Jarica Ensley was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs and Addy Keylon also homered for Bryan in the first game, and Heidi Smith was 2-for-2 with a homer in the rematch. Bethel's Melanie Alexander was 6-for-8 with five RBIs and four runs for the day; she homered in game one and had four doubles in game two.

* Sewanee got its first two softball wins in six games this season Saturday, 10-0 and 10-4 over Johnson in Knoxville. Alice Charboneau was 3-for-3 with a homer, a double, three RBIs and two runs for the Tigers in game one, when Michaela Walker also had three hits and two runs and allowed one hit in four innings pitched. Walker had three hits again in game two, with two RBIs, and Sarah Wright and winning pitcher Kendall Goodrum also had three hits each and Hannah Clarke had a three-run triple.

Baseball

* Bryan's baseball team, ranked 18th in the NAIA, is 8-1 after going 3-1 this past weekend at Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Lions won 4-3 and lost 4-3 to host William Carey after 2-1 and 7-1 wins over Campbellsville. Four pitchers combined on a four-hitter in the 2-1 game, when Parker Cosby scored both Bryan runs and Tyler Scott was 2-for-3 with the go-ahead single in the ninth inning. Jacob Justice was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Shawn Bracamontes bunted home the winning run against William Carey. Bracamontes and David Scoggins each had two RBIs with two hits in the 7-1 game, and Scott had a tying two-run single in the last inning of the Lions' loss.

Basketball

* Five Bryan women's basketball players scored 15 to 17 points in a 95-69 AAC victory Saturday at Montreat, but the Bryan men lost 86-81 despite 18 points and 10 rebounds from Justin Warner and 14 points each from Brandon Thomas (nine rebounds), Keaton Dotson and Noah Mulaski. Deandra Luna had 17 points and eight rebounds and Karli Combs scored 17 with five 3s for the female Lions (26-1, 22-0), while Kaitlynn Hennessee scored 16 and Destiny Kassner and Sarah Cain added 15 each. Cain made seven steals.
