Area sports notes: No. 4 Lee women fall at Union, but Lee men win

NCAA Division II's fourth-ranked Lee University lost 71-56 at old nemesis Union University in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Thursday night, but the Lee men won 74-68 to salvage a split of the doubleheader and clinch a first-round home game in the league tournament. Ryan Montgomery led the Flames (20-5, 15-3) with 16 points and four 3-point baskets, while Parker Suedekum had 13 points and seven rebounds and Quay Kennedy and Beyuan Hendricks scored 12 and 10 points. Tyree Boykin hit six 3s and scored 31 points for Union (17-9, 11-7). Jada Smith scored 29 for the Union women (22-4, 16-2), who shot 27-of-52 from the field, compared to 17-of-60 for the visiting Lady Flames (24-2, 16-2). Becca Cheeks and Haley Schubert each scored 13 points for Lee, and Lindsey Roddy added 11. Nicky Widenski had nine rebounds, and Abby Bertram passed for five assists.

* Chattanooga State pulled out two close wins over visiting Cleveland State in TCCAA basketball Wednesday night, 66-64 in the women's game and 80-75 in the men's. The second-place Lady Tigers (22-5, 13-3) let a 12-point lead shrink to 63-62 before holding on. They were led by Naja Fenelon with 14 points and five assists and Melisa Carter and Shaquala Walton with 13 and 11 points and 10 and 11 rebounds. For the fourth-place Lady Cougars (15-10, 11-6), Asjah Harrell scored 21 points with four 3s and Za'kkria Robinson had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Charisma Barner added 10 points. The Chattanooga State men (10-15, 7-9) trailed by 13 early in the second half. They got 22 points from Taye Galloway, 15 points and four steals from Zyrice Scott, 14 points from Lorenzo Ferrell and eight rebounds from Richard Nunez. Jakobey Hitchens led the Cougars (9-17, 6-11) with 21 points, while Demonte Person and Jon Morgan had 15 and 14 with seven and six rebounds. Jager Dickson collected nine rebounds.

* Covenant College junior Hannah Monday from Dade County made the USA South All-West Division first team in league honors announced Thursday, and senior Margo Koby represented the Lady Scots on the all-sportsmanship team. Monday had six double-doubles this season and averaged 12.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots a game.

Baseball

* Cleveland State lost 8-4 in junior college baseball Wednesday at Georgia Highlands. The Cougars tied the score with a four-run sixth inning but couldn't stay caught up. Alex Coulter was 2-for-4 in defeat.

Golf

* Dalton State sophomore Katelyn Skiffen is the Southern States Athletic Conference women's golfer of the week after finishing fifth out of the 86 participants and leading her team to third place in the Coastal Georgia Winter Invitational. Teammates Sydney Hermann and Isabel Rijos were among the SSAC's previous honorees in the 2019-20 season.
