Area sports notes: UTC wrestlers overwhelm Big Ten member Indiana

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestlers dominated visiting Big Ten member Indiana 26-10 in a dual meet Friday night at McKenzie Arena. The Hoosiers won the two lightest weight classes but lost seven of the other eight. The Mocs (7-9) got a pin from Hunter Fortner at 174 pounds, major decisions from Drew Nicholson at 165 and Rodney Jones at 197 and regular decisions from Mason Wallace, Tanner Smith, Tyler Shilson and Grayson Walthall. Their next competition is the Southern Conference tournament on March 8.

Softball

* Despite taking early leads on home runs by Gracey Kruse and Aly Walker, the UTC softball team needed two sixth-inning runs to edge Saint Louis 5-4 in the Frost Classic on Friday at Warner Park. UTC (4-5) earlier lost 4-3 in eight innings to Miami of Ohio after going up 3-0 on a two-out bases-loaded double by Kruse. Against Saint Louis, after Cameren Swafford's two-out single to right field plated Sidney Swantic with the tying run, an error on a ball Kruse put in play allowed Hayleigh Weissenbach to score from second base. Emily Coltharp was 2-for-3 in that game. Swafford was 2-for-3 against Miami, which tied the game with a last-out homer in the seventh. The Mocs play Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and UNLV at 2 and 4 p.m. today.

* Bryan College lost 3-2 in nine innings to Coastal Georgia and 7-6 to fifth-ranked host Georgia Gwinnett in NAIA softball Friday. Bryan (2-4) outhit Gwinnett (4-1) 10-5 with Brooke Belflower and Maryah Sober each going 2-for-3 and Hannah O'Shields batting in two runs. Against Coastal (8-1), Brianna Nagelhout was 2-for-4 with a tying single after Heidi Smith's triple in the seventh inning.

* Lee University improved to 9-4 with 8-0 and 15-0 home routs of Cedarville (0-6) behind pitchers Lulu Vasquez and Shonna Penney (4-0). Brooklynn Frazier was 4-for-7 with six RBIs. She homered in each game, and Madison Besaw had a two-run shot in Lee's 19-hit game two.

Tennis

* UTC lost 4-1 Friday in women's tennis at 26th-ranked Tennessee but won the doubles point with a huge victory at No. 1. After the Mocs' Bogdana Zaporozhets and Jessie Young won 6-1 at No. 2, Emma Van Hee and Caroline Gibbens topped the Lady Vols' eighth-ranked duo of Kaitlin Staines and Tenika McGiffin 6-4. Tennessee (9-1) took the first four singles matches, leaving Van Hee trailing McKiffin 6-4, 1-2 and UTC freshman Callie Billman leading 6-3, 1-2. Calhoun's Carly Briggs won 6-1 in doubles and 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 singles for Tennessee. UTC (5-3) plays today at Middle Tennessee State.

Golf

* The UTC women's golfers shared fifth place with South Alabama at 305 in Friday's first round of the 14-team Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational. Host Mercer tied Auburn for the lead at 5-over-par 293, 10 shots ahead of East Carolina and UNC Wilmington. The Mocs' Dorota Zalewska was tied for 14th at 75, followed by teammates Kirsty Beckwith at 76 and Rheagan Hall and Esme Hamilton at 77. The UTC men play today and Sunday at Florida State's Seminole Classic, which includes seven top-50 teams in the field of 14.

Soccer

* UTC's soccer Mocs begin a five-date spring schedule today at 1 p.m. against Kennesaw State at the UTC Sports Complex beside Engel Stadium.

Baseball

* In its USA South opener Friday against visiting Maryville, Covenant College scored six runs in the seventh inning to tie and pulled out a 12-11 win on a hustle play in the ninth. Alex Gonzalez beat out a potential double play to allow Harrison Adelgren to score the game-ending run. Josh Harvey was 3-f0r-3 with a homer, CJ Edmond homered and singled and matched Hunter Christian with two RBIs and Ken Alexander was 1-for-2 with three walks for Covenant (3-1). Derek Hurt was 3-for-5 with four RBIs for Maryville (5-2). Covenant's Tyler Moore made the national D3baseball.com team of the week along with Sewanee's Chris McNulty for their performances in games through last Sunday. Both are seniors. Moore batted .636 (7-for-11) in three games with a .692 on-base percentage, a triple, two doubles and five runs scored. McNulty hit .588 (10-for-17) in the Tigers' 4-0-1 start with three home runs, three other extra-base hits, 11 RBIs and eight runs.

* Cleveland State won 10-0 and 11-1, both in five innings, against visiting St. Charles. Bryce Jenkins and Kaleb Orr pitched two-hitters with six and five strikeouts. Reese Plemmons was 2-for-2 with two walks, a homer and four RBIs in the first game, when Jonathan Hickman also was 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs and Lance Dockery was 2-for-3 and scored three times. Dockery had two RBIs with two runs in game two, while Andrew Carpenter was 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs. Cooper Roberts also homered.

Lacrosse

* Lee University lost 21-4 at 12th-ranked Indianapolis in Division II women's lacrosse Friday. It was 16-0 at halftime. Giselle Gonzalez had two goals and an assist for Lee (2-1).
