Area sports notes: Mocs golfer A.J. Lintunen tied for fourth in Seminole Intercollegiate

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior golfer A.J. Lintunen was tied for fourth individually at 2-under-par 142 after Saturday's two rounds in Florida State's Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, and the Mocs were eighth at 589 in the field of 14 that includes seven top-50 teams. No. 17 Washington led at 577. Lintunen shot 69 in the second round, when teammate Matt Smith carded a 71 to get his score to 150. Will Porter was between them at 148, tied for 23rd.

* The UTC women's golfers were seventh at 611 in the 14-team Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational after the second round Saturday in Greensboro, Georgia. Auburn led by 15 strokes at 577. Esme Hamilton's 74 was the Mocs' best score in a team 306, and she was tied for 16th at 151 with Dorota Zalewska sharing 18th at 152.

Soccer

* The Chattanooga Football Club announced Friday the signing of 6-foot-4 midfielder Ian McGrath from Crestwood, Illinois, for the club's first professional season, which begins next Saturday in Oakland, California. At 23 he already has notable experience, having played for FC Buffalo - where his one season got him on the all-decade team - Nashville SC, Inter Nashville FC, Queen of the South in Scotland, the Philadelphia Fury and, most recently, USL Championship's Oklahoma City Energy. McGrath played collegiately for Evansville and scored 26 goals in 71 matches. "He will help us in a number of ways, not the least of which is his size and ability in the air," Chattanooga FC coach Peter Fuller said in a release. "He has great feet, is an excellent soccer player and will be a great asset to CFC." CFC also announced this week a flex ticket package of 10 tickets for any of 18 annual-pass games in 2020. Those tickets can be used all for one game or spread through the 18, which do not include exhibition, US Open Cup or playoff matches. See CFCTix.com.

Tennis

* The UTC men's team opened Southern Conference play Friday with a 7-0 defeat of The Citadel on the Mocs' outdoor courts. UTC (10-2) won all three doubles matches 6-1 but needed three sets for Nos. 4-6 singles victories for Jeffrey Dewald, Simon Bustamante and Turner Voges. Niklas Gerdes breezed 6-2, 6-0 and is 12-0 at No. 1 this semester - and 10-0 at No. 2 doubles with Tomas Rodriguez, who won in straight sets at No. 2 singles along with Kerim Hyatt at No. 3. The Mocs play today at USC Upstate.

* The UTC women lost 4-1 Saturday to Middle Tennessee State (6-5) in Murfreesboro, where the Mocs (5-4) will play UT-Martin on Sunday. UTC's point came on a 6-3, 6-3 singles win by Emma Van Hee, and freshmen Callie Billman and Grace Anne Dunavant won 7-5 at No. 3 doubles. Billman was leading 6-3, 5-3 when the team competition ended, and Jessie Young at No. 1 was down but close to tied at 7-6, 3-5.

Basketball

* The Bryan College women's basketball team completed its second consecutive undefeated run through the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season Saturday with a 95-60 home rout of Columbia College. The Lions (28-1, 24-0), ranked 14th in NAIA Division II, got 18 points from Tristan McClellan, 14 from Kaitlynn Hennessee, 12 from Sarah Cain and 10 each from Destiny Kassner and Karli Combs. Deandra Luna and Shayla Ludy had six and four assists.

* Despite a game-high 22 points from Ellie Treanton, the Sewanee women's team's season ended Saturday with an 86-58 loss at No. 2 seed Rhodes (16-9) in the Southern Athletic Association tournament quarterfinal round. Lakeisha Phillips and Allison Hitchcock added 13 and 10 points for the Tigers (10-16).

* Cleveland State's Lady Cougars edged Dyersburg State 85-81 in overtime to tie the visitors for third place in the TCCAA and secure the No. 3 seed in the league tournament, behind Walters State and Chattanooga State. Asjah Harrell had 29 points and five steals for the Lady Cougars (16-10, 12-6), and Charisma Barner, Britnay Gore and Za'kkria Robinson contributed 17, 15 and 14 points and seven, 10 and 10 rebounds. The Cleveland State men lost 115-81 but got 21 points and 12 rebounds from Jakobey Hitchens, 16 points and five assists from Demonte Person and 12 points from Jaquez Hicks.

Lacrosse

* Hattie Fogarty scored four first-half goals and Grace Zechman totaled five assists as the Sewanee women's team rose to 3-0 for the season with a 14-5 win Saturday at Piedmont. Lily Farriss netted three goals for the Tigers, who led 11-0 at halftime and 13-0 before Piedmont (1-2) scored.

* The Sewanee men lost 14-6 at Roanoke and are 0-3. Daniel Burnum scored two Sewanee goals.
