Area sports notes: Lee women's golfers win Battle of Hilton Head

The 14th-ranked Lee University women's golf team won the Battle of Hilton Head by two strokes Tuesday at the Robert Trent Jones-Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort. The 36-hole event was loaded with NCAA Division II Top 25 teams, but the Lady Flames shot a collective 296 on Monday and held on with a 309 for a winning 605, two strokes ahead of Carson-Newman. "It was a different golf course out there today. Tough pins and strong wind made it very challenging," coach John Maupin said in a Lee release. "We hit a rough stretch on holes 9-11 in our round, but I thought we showed a lot of resiliency to regain our composure down the stretch." Lee sophomores Emily Felix and Carson McKie tied for eighth individually with 150s, and freshman Supuschaya Srichantamit tied for 13th at 152. Senior Haverly Harrold tied for 20th at 153.

* Led by freshman Beck Burnette's seventh-place even-par 216 for 54 holes, the seventh-ranked Lee men's golfers finished fifth at 878 in the Saint Leo Invitational at Dade City, Florida. Host Saint Leo won with an 867. Lee's Connor Pollman had two 71s like Burnette and tied for 13th a 219. The Flames' Scott Odell, Dustin DeMersseman and Dylan Lillard shot 223, 225 and 227.

Tennis

* University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Emma Van Hee was named Tuesday the Southern Conference women's tennis player of the week. She won in singles against Middle Tennessee State and UT Martin after an unfinished match at Tennessee, where she and Caroline Gibbens beat the eighth-ranked doubles duo in Division I.

Basketball

* The Covenant College men's basketball Scots made a remarkable comeback to extend first the game and then their season Tuesday night. Hosting Maryville in the first round of the USA South tournament, Covenant (15-11) climbed out of a 16-point hole in the final eight minutes of the second half and won 83-81 on Chris Barnette's 3-point basket with 3.3 seconds left in overtime. Will Crumly had 25 points, 13 rebounds and four assists in the win, and James Mitchell and Daevon Platt scored 12 points each. Barnette had 11 plus seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

Baseball

* Lincoln Memorial used a five-run third inning and a three-run eighth to overcome Lee leads and win 9-8 in Division II baseball Tuesday in Harrogate, Tennessee. Dylan Standifer was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs and Ryan Beamish was 2-for-5 with two RBIs for Lee (8-6), which got two hits apiece also from Justen Freeman and Justin Fragale.

* Despite blasting four homers, Cleveland State lost 14-6 to visiting Gordon State in junior college baseball. The Cougars' four-base hits came from Alex Ray, who was 3-for-5 and scored twice; Jonathan Hickman, who was 2-for-4; and Tanner Hill and Gavin Hollis, who each was 1-for-2. Andrew Carpenter was 2-for-5.

Softball

* Lee junior Lulu Vasquez was a Gulf South Conference softball co-pitcher of the week after going 2-0 with 11 strikeouts against Carson-Newman and four in a four-inning appearance against Cedarville. She's 4-2 with a 1.94 earned run average and 50 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings. The Lady Flames (9-4) are scheduled for a doubleheader today at 12th-ranked North Georgia (16-2).
