Area sports notes: UTC softball team splits two in Charleston

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team began play Friday in the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, South Carolina, with a 7-0 win over Coppin State and an eight-inning 1-0 loss to Campbell. Hannah Wood and Allison Swinford combined to pitch a five-hitter with eight strikeouts against Coppin for UTC (5-8), which got two RBIs apiece from Aly Walker and Emma Sturdivant. Walker was 2-for-4 and Emily Coltharp was 2-for-2 with the game's first RBI and two runs scored. Gracie Kruse was 2-for-3. Celie Hudson lost a shutout and game two on a sacrifice fly in her 50th complete game as a Moc. Morgan Kazerooni was 2-for-3 with a double for UTC's only hits against the Camels (8-8).

* Amber Atkins was 3-for-4 and scored two runs in the first game and then went 4-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and four runs as Cleveland State opened TCCAA play with a 15-7 loss and a 12-4 win at Jackson State. Also for the Lady Cougars, Kat Cechini was 5-for-7 in the two games with a homer and two RBIs in each, McCoy Hensley also homered in game one and Haley Fair was 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the win, when Kaylee Hughes had three RBIs and Kaylee Cornelius struck out eight Lady Green Jays.

* Covenant dropped to 0-6 with 6-3 and 12-6 home losses to Greensboro (6-2). Covenant's Faith Manning, Kirsten Aanensen and Aileen Hill hit consecutive RBI doubles in the fourth inning of game one, and Manning had two RBIs in the rematch, when Madyson Gibbins was 3-for-3 and Erika Mast, Cassee Wood and MK Pritchett each had two hits.

Basketball

* The Chattanooga State and Cleveland State men's basketball teams wrapped up their seasons Friday with 83-71 and 68-65 losses to 10th-seeded Volunteer State and eighth-seeded Motlow, respectively. Motlow (15-16) won with a 3-point basket in the closing seconds against the Cougars (9-19), who got 26 points and nine rebounds from Jakobey Hitchens, 11 rebounds from Jaquez Hicks and five assists from Demonte Person. Darius Harding had 19 points and nine rebounds, Derrick Rayford 18 points and Jace Wallace 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Bucks. Vol State (5-20) was led by Zack Morris's 23 points. Richard Nunez had 21 plus 16 rebounds for Chattanooga State (11-17); Everette Wilson contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, and Lorenzo Ferrell scored 13.

* Despite a career high of 31 points fom Chris Barnette, the Covenant men's basketball season ended Friday with a 76-71 loss to Methodist in the USA South tournament semifinals in Danville, Virginia. Huntingdon upset host Averett in the later game, 86-84. Also for Covenant (15-12), Will Crumly and Daevon Platt scored 11 each. Barnette was 12-of-15 from the field, 5-of-7 on 3-point shots.

Fishing

* The Bryan College team of Conner DiMauro and Cole Sands finished fifth Friday in the FLW college national bass fishing tournament for 2019 qualifiers. Earning $2,000 for the Lions program, they weighed four bass totaling 10 pounds, 2 ounces for a three-day 47-13. The winners from Stephen F. Austin totaled 56-5, winning by an ounce. In the Bassmaster College Series tournament on Alabama's Smith Lake, Bryan's Bailey Fain and Preston Kendrick zoomed up 25 places to sixth Friday with a 14-4 haul for a two-day 25-12.

Baseball

* Cleveland State began the TCCAA portion of its baseball schedule Friday with a 10-5 victory at Jackson State. Alex Ray was 3-for-4 with two walks and three RBIs for the Cougars, and Lance Dockery, Tanner Hill and Gavin Hollis each had three hits also. Courtney Payne had two hits and two RBIs.

* Covenant lost 16-10 to visiting Emory (7-1) but got two RBIs apiece from Kenny Mills, Josh Harvey, Ken Alexander and Hunter Christian. Alexander, Christian and Andrew Brock homered for the Scots (5-3), while Brooks DuBose doubled twice and CJ Edmond was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Lacrosse

* Lee University edged visiting UVA-Wise 15-12 in women's lacrosse Friday, as Dariana Blanton scored four goals and Giselle Gonzalez and Shayna Ryan netted three apiece, each of the three adding an assist.
