Area sports notes: Cleveland State women win, men lose in overtime at Motlow

The Cleveland State basketball Lady Cougars rose to 5-1 in the TCCAA and 9-5 overall with a 79-70 win Wednesday at Motlow State, as Asjah Harrell had 21 points and nine assists, Britnay Gore 18 points, 14 rebounds and four steals and Kyeshia Dalton and Charisma Barner 12 points each. The Cleveland State men lost 83-74 in overtime and are 5-9, 2-4 in the league. Kerry Pratt led the Cougars with 19 points, while Jakobey Hitchens and Jon Morgan contributed 13 and 10 points with 10 rebounds each. Jimmy Brown had career highs of 12 points and eight rebounds. Darius Harding had 28 points and eight rebounds for Motlow (8-11), which got 17 and nine from Jace Wallace and nine assists and four steals from Derrick Rayford.

* Zack Allen's collegiate high of 18 points led the Covenant men to their 11th consecutive USA South road win Wednesday at Piedmont, 70-49. Also for the Scots (7-4, 4-0), who took control with an 11-minute 30-12 surge in the first half, Will Crumly provided 14 points and seven rebounds and Chris Barnette had 12 points and seven assists. James Mitchell was 3-of-4 on 3-pointers for nine points.

* Covenant's women lost 72-65 in their USA South game at LaGrange (7-5, 2-3). Hannah Monday and Ruthie Moore led the Lady Scots (5-8, 2-2) with 19 and 18 points and eight and nine rebounds, and Cosette Kirsch had 11 points and seven assists. Margo Koby had seven rebounds with nine points.

Wrestling

* McCallie School sophomore wrestler James Howard was the 285-pound champion of the Cheesehead Invitational tournament last weekend in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, and Blue Tornado junior Alex Whitworth took third place at 160 pounds, going 6-1. Howardo was 6-0 in the elite national event and won 3-0 in the final over an opponent from Illinois. McCallie finished 17th as a team with six participants, and junior Gavin Cagle finished ninth at 170.
