The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga announced this week that the athletic program set an all-time academic high this past semester with an overall grade point average of 3.197, bettering the 3.178 mark from last spring. It is the third consecutive semester the department has set a new record, and it is the 11th time in the last 12 semesters UTC's athetes as a group eclipsed the 3.0 mark.
"I continue to be amazed by how the success of our student-athletes in the classroom grows nearly every semester," vice chancellor and athletic director Mark Wharton said in a school release. "Our coaches set the tone with the caliber of individuals they recruit, and our entire campus community works hard to make sure all of our students are successful."
The Mocs had 169 athletes make the dean's list for the fall semester, with 46 of them earning 4.0 GPAs. Women's golf led the way with a 3.82 team GPA. The men's basketball team cracked the 3.0 barrier for the first time in program history with a 3.17 aggregate. This gave UTC a school-record 13 teams with a 3.0 or higher. Softball (3.59) and football (2.83) also set program marks in the fall.
In continuing that trend, UTC sophomore wrestler Tanner Smith is the General Shale Southern Conference student-athlete of the week for his 3.85 GPA as a business analytics major and his fifth-place finish in the 149-pound class of the Southern Scuffle. The Mocs will host Gardner-Webb on Sunday at 2 p.m. in McKenzie Arena
