Area sports notes: TSWA all-state soccer teams include seven area girls

Seven Chattanooga-area players were selected to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association all-state girls' soccer teams for 2019. Signal Mountain had three players on the Class A team - defender Haleigh Ward, midfielder Lucy Calhoun and forward Camilla Mincey - while GPS placed two on the Division II team - midfielder Kennedy Ball and forward Ashley Grant. Soddy-Daisy defender Amy Rasmussen was among those honored in Class AAA, and East Hamilton's Jessica Dunavant was on the TSWA AA team. Mincey led the area with 32 goals, including three in the state tournament, while Calhoun totaled goals and 10 assists and Ward was the best defender on a Lady Eagles team that won 16 games and their second state championship in three years. Grant led GPS with 21 goals and also had 12 assists, while Ball scored 15 goals and added 14 assists on a 17-win team that finished second in the state tournament. Dunavant was part of a Lady Hurricanes defense that allowed just one goal in five straight wins to reach the state tournament.

Basketball

* Local high school graduates Ryan Montgomery and Beyuan Hendricks gave Lee University a sweep of the weekly Gulf South Conference men's basketball honors announced Tuesday. For their parts in the Flames' ninth and 10th consecutive wins, senior forward Montgomery from Central High repeated as the GSC player of the week and Baylor grad Hendricks, a Cleveland resident, was the freshman of the week. Hendricks scored 18 and nine points with eight and seven rebounds - and four assists Saturday - while Montgomery scored 21 and 29 points. He leads the GSC with 21.6 points per game.

* Randy Bell was 7-of-9 from the field and 4-for-4 on 3-point shots in scoring 23 points, and he added six assists as Dalton State improved to 16-1 with an 86- nonconference home win over Fisk on Tuesday. Kevon Tucker had 11 points and Aaron Burress, Igor Stoic and Rodley Adjei 10 each, Stoic with 10 rebounds.

* The Covenant College men rose to 6-0 in the USA South and 9-4 overall with a 75-55 defeat of visiting Brevard. Will Crumly led the Scots with 12 points and nine rebounds. Chris Barnette and Mitchell Hollis scored nine points each, and Promise Igbanu had four assists.

* The Sewanee women halted a five-game losing skid with a 76-57 makeup-game win Tuesday at home against Wesleyan (Georgia). Kinsley Logan overcame early foul trouble and scored 16 points for the Tigers (6-10), while Bella Bombassi had 13 points on 6-of-6 shooting and eight rebounds, Ellie Treanton and Abby Young 12 points each and Allison Hitchcock 10 points. Natera Perkins scored 26 for Wesleyan (0-16).

Swimming & Diving

* Sewanee's Kate Mabry was the Southern Athletic Association women's swimmer of the week, and teammate Olivia Durfee was the diver of the week. Mabry won three individual events in the Tigers' loss to nationally ranked Birmingham-Southern, and Durfee was first in 1-meter and second in 3-meter, both with season-best point totals.
