Area sports notes: Chattanooga State tops Cleveland State to reach women's regional final

No. 2 seed Chattanooga State defeated third seed Cleveland State 68-59 in the second women's semifinal Monday night in the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII basketball tournament at Columbia, Tennessee. The Lady Tigers (26-5) will play fourth seed Dyersburg State (24-7) today at 5 p.m. EST for the championship and a spot in the NJCAA Division I national tournament. Dyersburg upset top seed Walters State 75-67. Shaquala Walton scored 17 points and Melisa Carter and Naja Fenelon had 16 each, Carter with nine rebounds, in the Lady Tigers' 23rd win in 24 games. Charisma Barner had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Asjah Harrell scored 15 for the Lady Cougars (17-11).

* Morehead State junior guard Jazzmyn Elston from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School and State Fair Community College in Missouri was selected co-newcomer of the week in Ohio Valley Conference women's basketball. Shooting 48.4% from the field last week, Elston scored 21 points against Austin Peay and 19 against Eastern Kentucky.

* Sewanee sophomore guard Ellie Treanton received honorable mention Monday for the second year in a row in the Southern Athletic Association women's basketball all-conference voting. Treanton averaged 12.6 points a game this season and led the SAA in minutes played per game at 35.2.

Baseball

* Chattanooga State won 9-8 and lost 9-1 in a TCCAA baseball home doubleheader Sunday against Walters State. Branson Bowling was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI in the win for the Tigers (8-6, 1-2), when Bass Cooper knocked in two runs and Eddie Satisky, Nick Blubaugh, Logan Smith and Lyndon Weaver was each 2-for-3 and combined for five runs and three RBIs.

* Lee University's baseball team escaped a bases-loaded bottom of the ninth inning for a 7-6 victory Sunday at Christian Brothers and a Gulf South Conference series win. Thomas Zazzaro was 4-for-5 with an RBI double and two runs scored and Alan Smith had a sacrifice fly and what turned out to be the winning single for the Flames (10-7, 3-3). Saturday, they lost 6-5 and won 10-1 on ace Logan Workman's four-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Smith and Dylan Standifer drove in three and two runs and Zazzaro, Ryan Beamish, Landon Silver and Justen Freeman each contributed two hits in that game. Freeman was 3-for-4 and Justin Fragale homered, singled and batted in three runs in Lee's loss.

* Sewanee followed 3-2 and 7-2 losses to visiting SAA rival Centre (8-2, 2-1) this past weekend with 18 hits and an 11-7 win in Sunday's second game. Max Murray was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Shane Smith had three RBIs with two hits for the Tigers (7-3-1, 1-2) in the finale, when Jared Demkowicz had two doubles and scored two runs. Saturday, Jack Galanek had three hits, a run and an RBI for Sewanee.

Fishing

* Jim Neece Jr. of Bristol, Tennessee, won the FLW Toyota Series Central Division bass tournament on Chickamauga Lake with a three-day total of 57 pounds, 5 ounces, capped by a five-fish limit weighing 20-9 Saturday. He received $40,045. Steve Barnes of Harrison was third at 50-12, good for $11,563, and Spring City's Josh Norris and Vonore's Brent Butler got $9,636 and $9,314 for fourth and fifth at 49-9 and 49-0. Spring City's Wesley Strader and Harrison's Gavin Ainslie were eighth and ninth at 41-11 and 38-4. Ooltewah's Jason Cook was fifth at 25-0 among the co-anglers.

Tennis

* Covenant College senior Esther Eddy was named Monday the USA South women's tennis player of the week, and she and freshman partner Madelyn Savage were the doubles team of the week. Eddy went 3-0 at No. 1 singles with wins of 6-0, 6-3; 6-2, 6-4; and 6-0, 6-0. She and Savage also went 3-0 in the No. 1 slot.

Pickleball

* Katie Dyer of Ooltewah and Minnesota resident Taylor Ulin finished fourth in the women's doubles pro division at the Florida Grand Slam pickleball tournament this past weekend in Bonita Springs. Pickleball Global has Dyer ranked 14th in women's double pro.
