5-at-10: Georgia questions, Braves stink, and NFL cuts

Are you ready? We're ready.

From the "Talks too much" studios, let's make the magic happen.

Georgia questions

We reviewed UT's questions Monday. We looked around the SEC on Tuesday.

Today's let's examine at the University of Georgia.

And since we have a cohost on Press Row who knows more about the Bulldogs than almost anyone, we'll pose the questions, and then we'll get his answers some time today.

Deal? Deal.

* Is the secondary ready for prime time?

* Is the receiving corps ever going to be healthy?

* Is Hutson Mason going to be more D.J. Shockley or Joe Cox?

(OK, we couldn't resist. Here are our quick answers before we call on the bullpen:

* Is the secondary ready for prime time? We say yes, because Jeremy Pruitt has never had a bad secondary, and that has to count for something.

* Is the receiving corps ever going to be healthy? No. But there is enough talent there to be at least solid, and coupled with the overflowing stars in the backfield, here's believing that Mike Bobo and the offensive staff will be able to get creative.

* Is Hutson Mason going to be more D.J. Shockley or Joe Cox? We believe Paschall is going to say more of the former, but we are leaning toward more of the latter.)

Thoughts? And remember, we'll do UTC tomorrow and if you have any questions about your college team, send them along and we'll answer them in Friday's mailbag.

Braves

Ouch-standing.

See if this strikes a chord: Braves get a solid outing from their pitching staff, fail to generate much offense and unable to make the most of the occasional base runner they do get and lose a winnable game.

Welcome to the 2014 Braves season in a sentence that also works as a game story after Tuesday's 3-2 loss at New York.

The good: Alex Wood has the look of a very capable mid- to top-of-the-rotation left-hander. In his last six starts, Wood has gone at least six innings and allowed fewer than three earned runs in each of those before Tuesday, when he allowed three. The tough-luck lefty is 9-10 on the season despite ranking in the top 15 in the NL with a 3.09 ERA.

The bad: An offense that continues to find new ways to struggle hit into four double plays Tuesday. That's hard to fathom. In fact, the plague that has been the record-setting strikeout patrol would have been better than the river of DPs the offense found.

The Uggla: It's been a while since we've checked in on Stinky Upton, and wow, has he been awful. Check these numbers: In August he is 7-for-59 (.119) with 21 strikeouts. Wowser. Dude did not play Tuesday meaning he got an actual night off in a month of off nights.

NFL cuts

Training camps around the NFL have been full of activity and action for the better part of the last month.

Now they are about to get filled with emotion and difficult choices.

The first wave of cuts came Tuesday as teams were forced to trim rosters to 75 players. The next round comes before Saturday's 4 p.m. deadline when teams must be at 53.

There were some notable names wiped from the ranks of the employed Tuesday. Here are some of the biggest:

* Kicker Jay Feely was released by Arizona.

* Adrian Wilson was released by the Bears. Wilson was arguably the best safety in football for a generation but the 35-year-old is moving too slowly to make the impact plays that were his calling card.

* Former second-rounders Alan Branch and Ras-I Dowling were released by the Bills and the Jets respectively.

* Former first-round pick Brady Quinn was cut by the Dolphins.

* The Patriots cut former Pro Bowl defensive linemen Tommy Kelly and Will Smith.

* Seattle cut former University of Texas defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat, who once was among the top high school prospects in the country.

Also on the cut list was Nu'Keese Richardson, the short-term former UT wide out who was cut by the Colts. (So yes, Richardson and Da'Rick Rogers were in the same camp for a while this month. Hide the Doritos.)

Here's CBSsports.com list of all the cuts from all the teams http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000381516/article/cuts-tracker-player-cuts-for-all-32-nfl-teams.

This and that

- From the files of "Let's not tell everything we know," West Virginia QB Rick Trickett shared that his first kiss was Nick Saban's daughter http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/11416418/west-virginia-mountaineers-qb-clint-trickett-says-nick-saban-daughter-was-first-kiss. Relax, they were 6. Funny story.

- Then there's this http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24681264/look-seahawks-fan-has-team-logo-on-prosthetic-eyeball. Dude has a fake eyeball and a Seattle Seahawks logo on the eye. Eye-gad.

- The owner of the Minnesota Timberwolves took some shots at recently departed superstar Kevin Love. Whatever.

- Man, when did UNC turn into Miami circa 1988? Here's a report that the football program - which is still on probation from previous NCAA offenses - is investigating a hazing incident https://sports.yahoo.com/news/north-carolina-investigating-alleged-hazing-incident-with-football-team-221218340.html earlier this month. Wow. At least the NCAA won't have too far to travel if they decide to look into this, since they have reopened the academic fraud investigations of the UNC hoops and football programs.
