5-at-10: Weekend winners and losers, Redskins no more, Multiple choice Monday about Harrison Ford, Rushmore of well-known sports owners

FILE - In this Dec. 15, 2019, file photo, Washington Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins warms up before an NFL football game in Landover, Md. A new name must still be selected for the Washington Redskins football team, one of the oldest and most storied teams in the National Football League, and it was unclear how soon that will happen. But for now, arguably the most polarizing name in North American professional sports is gone at a time of reckoning over racial injustice, iconography and racism in the U.S. (AP Photo/Patrick Semansky, File)

Weekend winners

Collin Morikawa. Dude can slap play. He beat Justin Thomas in an awesome playoff Sunday. That was fun.

The Mrs. 5-at-10. She wins almost every weekend for a lot of reasons - hey, if you got to spend this much time with you know who, you'd be laughing til you were crying - but her "Safe at Home" project continues to get a lot of love. Here's a look at it from TFP Lifestyle editor and all-around good egg Lisa Denton, and a TON of photos are included.

The guy getting patents for Redskins replacement names. Did you see this dude? Hey, it may not work - someone else tried the same thing for the Las Vegas Raiders - but you have to tip the visor at the creativity.

Chattanooga FC. I watched more soccer this weekend than I have in the last couple of years combined. The CFC grabbed a 3-1 win over the Georgia Revolution. I was entertained. Side note: The broadcast was pretty good all things considered and the two dudes doing the play-by-play and analysis were very good. I will watch again. Here's more from TFP ace Patrick MacCoon.

Cole Custer. Now that's a NASCAR name, right? Cole Custer was born eight years after the movie Days of Thunder was released - Tom Cruise was Cole Trickle in that one, which was robbed, ROBBED I say, of an Oscar (kidding mostly) - so maybe he was named for Cruise's character. But still, Cole Custer screams NASCAR. And a rookie win is always cool. (Side note: No surprise that Kevin Harvick was right there at the end.)

Kamaru Usman. The MMA star beat bigger star Jorge Masvidal on Fight Island. (Side question: Would you watch a reality TV show called "Fight Island" because I am pretty sure I would, especially in the time of Corona?)

Weekend losers

Hamilton County. Dang, gang, what in the world is going on around us? For real? Forget the stupidity of a couple of Hamilton County Commissioners - Warren Mackey and Tim Boyd namely - banging the drum of dumb that is discretionary accounts for a second. We got mask protestors, which officially prove people will protest anything. (Side question: If you are an "Absolute, no mask, it infringes on my liberty" person, are you also an anti-vaxxer? Asking for about 370 million American friends.) We also have a mayoral candidate acting the fool and getting arrested. Is 9:15 on Monday, too early to start drinking CoColas?

Adrian Wojnarowski. Dude dropped a "(Bleep) You" to a U.S. Senator from Missouri who had sent an email to the NBA and several of the media members who cover the league asking why other options like 'Free Hong Kong' were not offered to players. Hey, my stance on the conflicts of interest and unneeded headaches for minimal impact of these uni changes have been oft repeated, but Woj's response was very unprofessional. He has been suspended and supported by LeBron James, among others, which only continues the controversy. (Side question: Does Wow actually get better connected by this? I think so. And while we're wading into conspiracy theories, could this all be jazz hands to distract everyone from the simple fact that the NBA nor ESPN has offered an answer to Sen. Josh Hawley's original question, which calls out the NBA's hypocrisy?)

College football fans. Raise your hand if you think there is any chance for a full, normal college football season. We'll wait. The weekend started with conferences eliminating nonconference games. The SEC is meeting today. Anything new is bad news, including this report from The Athletic that there's a growing belief that a high number of the big-time draft prospects will skip this season, according to agents.

So there's this. Lee-Davis High in Virginia - yes, named for Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis - is in controversy about its nickname wait for it The Confederates. So there's that.

Just a name

We mentioned the guy trying to copyright all the various possible suggestions for the next name of the Washington NFL franchise.

We all knew this was coming, whether it was seven years ago when owner Daniel Snyder was adamant with words like "Never" or earlier this month when the focus intensely shifted to 'Redskins.'

So what's next? I'm with a few of you in support of RedTails - the self-given nickname the Tuskegee airmen gave each other - and think the transition would be pretty seamless, all things considered.

That name has growing support too, according to this Yahoo! poll. (Side note: In second on that poll is 'Warriors' which seems like jumping from the pot of boiling water into the sauce pan of simmering sauce, no?)

So what's your choice?

And make no mistake, this is part of the cancel culture too. This is business and others impacting change in their market because of appearances, beliefs and concerns of perceptions.

Does it matter that we almost all agree with this one? I'm not sure, but it is part of the cancel culture, simply because of the fact that Daniel Snyder does not make this decision without the pressure from outside parties.

Thoughts?

This and that

- So, there's this. Mike Golic Sr. appears to be set to stay with ESPN as a college football analyst. You know, if there is college football. So there's that. Kind of feels like ESPN - which is dealing with a bunch right now, no? - made a decision to part ways, then reacted to the backlash and love expressed for Golic and then threw a Hail Mary to keep in some kind of role. Golic not on radio feels like if ESPN decided to move on from Adam Schefter and then decided, "Nah, let's have Schefty cover the MLS for us."

- You know the rules. Here's TFP college football expert David Paschall on the rivalries and unique match-ups the SEC will lose this season. Good stuff, because, that's all Paschall knows in terms of college football.

- Speaking of that, and the sour news of college football details these days, the Press Row crew would have been in the ATL right now getting geared up for SEC media days. Dang you Corona.

- This is interesting. A report from Sports Business Journal has Tony Stewart and some other big NASCAR names launching a new racing circuit next year with CBS. Questions abound, no? Is racing popular enough to have another circuit? Is there enough money? What happens if Stewart and Co. embrace the Confederate flag?

Today's question

Weekend winners and losers, go.

Which athletic star has the perfect name for his or her chosen field of excellence, because Cole Custer is the leader in the clubhouse right now?

As for multiple choice Monday, what do think:

On this, his 78th birthday, which Harrison Ford role is the best?

A) Han Solo

B) Indiana JonesC) Dr. Richard Kimball

D) Jack Ryan

Wow, that's a strong list, because a lot of actors could make a career off any one of those, and Ford has all of those. Well-played, Harrison. Well-played indeed.

As for other happenings on July 13, let's discuss.

Ken Jeong is 51 today. Live Aid was 35 years ago today, and man, the Queen movie reminded a lot of us how cool that was, right?

The Hollywood Sign was dedicated on this day in 1923.

Nathan Bedford Forrest was born on this day 199 years ago. I know at least three people that were named after the former Confederate general and one of the original founders of the KKK. I need to reach out to them to see what they feel during these times of controversy.

On this day two years ago, Scarlett Johansson withdrew from a role as a transgender person in a movie because of criticism that she was not transgender. Side note: Like the voice actors who got criticism of being the voice of a character who is either not the actors' race or gender, I simply do not get this one friends. Think of it this way: What would the outcry be if Johansson turned down a transgender role for personal reasons? Outrage, right? Talk about danged if you do, danged if you don't.

Cameron Crowe is 63 today. Almost Famous is so money. Michael Spinks is 64 today.

George Steinbrenner died 10 years ago today.

Rushmore of the most 'famous' modern-era (post 1980) professional sports owners. Go.
