Parker Gray of Cleveland is tied for fourth at 2-under-par 69 after the first round Wednesday of the 53rd annual Tennessee Junior Amateur golf tournament at The Legacy in Springfield. Davis Armstong of Brentwood leads at 64, with Kingsport's William Nottingham at 65 and Knoxville's Chip Thomas at 67. Tullahoma's Jack Uselton shares 14th place at 72, Crossville's Zach Young is in a big group at 73 and Chattanooga's Zach Riddle and Cleveland's Dylan Lillard are among those at 74. Sewanee's Tommy Oliver shot a 75.

* Peter Chung of Dacula, Ga., led four qualifiers in Athens, Ga., for this year's U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, set for July 18-23 at The Honors Course in Ooltewah. Chung shot a 139 for 36 holes Monday and Tuesday at the University of Georgia course. Justin Kim of Rome, who won the recent Georgia Junior Championship, qualified along with Ben Carr of Columbus with 140s, and Jake Forgay of Augusta secured the fourth spot with a 141. Trent Phillips from Inman, S.C., and Turk Pettit of Auburn, Ala., shot 142 and 143 and are alternates for the national tournament. Gage Smith of LaFayette, Ga., tied for 32nd at 153.

* Wes Gosselin, who's entering his senior season at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, tied for fifth in the recent Southeastern Amateur at Country Club of Columbus (Ga.), finishing the 72-hole tournament at par. He opened with a 2-over 72 and followed with a 71 to make the cut, shot a 68 in the third round and closed with a 69 for a 280 total. Mocs teammate Etienne Brault, who will be a sophomore this year, finished third in the recent Future Pros Championship at Elm Ridge Country Club in Ile Bizard, just outside of Montreal. Within a shot of the lead with nine holes to play, he had rounds of 71, 70, 76 and 74 to finish at 3-over-par 291.

Softball

* Former Ooltewah High School athlete Brooke Best O'Hair was the National Christian College Athletic Association Softball Coach of the Year after her Mississippi College Lady Choctaws won the NCCAA national championship last month. O'Hair's 10th team at the school in Clinton, Miss., went 39-19 (a program record for wins) in addition to earning the first women's national title in school history. Mississippi College is a newcomer to the Gulf South Conference, which also includes Lee University, and is in its NCAA transition period before being included in Division II postseason play. O'Hair, a former Mississippi State second baseman, has a 278-178 record with the Lady Choctaws, with all of the program's five 30-win seasons coming during her tenure.

* Chattanooga's Lighthouse Lookouts/Athletic Shop finished second out of seven men's 50-plus major slowpitch teams in the SPA Peach State Classic last weekend in Marietta, Ga. Lighthouse split with the Georgia Impact Legends, the champions in Maryville, Tenn., the previous weekend when Lighthouse was third, and for the second straight week lost twice to Southeast Combat from Altoona, Ala. Lighthouse hit 51 home runs in eight games, including wins over teams from Atlanta; Dudley, Ga.; Birmingham, Ala.; and Pensacola, Fla. The Lookouts' Mike Wood batted .833 with 11 home runs and 28 RBIs and received the Best Offense award. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Al Cox (.833), Van Shumaker (.793, seven home runs), Roger Smith (.793, six homers) and pitcher Stacy Powell (.760). Other notable Lighthouse performances came from Rodney Waters (.724, nine homers), Kevin Highsmith (.724, four homers), Steve Moffett (.720, five homers) and Butch Womack (.625, two homers).

Basketball

* The UTC's men's basketball team's 2015-16 schedule poster ranked fourth in the nation among entries in the University Division (NCAA Division I schools) at this week's Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America's annual publication contest. Assistant athletics director for marketing Geoff Wilcox, director of media relations Jim Horten, university relations art director April Cox and graphic designer Courtney Muller collaborated on the project.
