It's playoff time on the PGA Tour.
The FedEx Cup playoffs begin this week with the St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis. The 122-player field will contain three Baylor School alums, with each having posted his best regular season finish in the FedEx Cup standings.
Luke List, who won the Farmers Insurance Open in late January, enters this week 29th in the standings, while Keith Mitchell, who has six top-10 placements, is 36th. Stephan Jaeger has qualified for his first playoff run after finishing 90th, and he is the hottest of the three.
After earning his first career top-five finish by claiming fifth at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit late last month, Jaeger used a closing 8-under 62 this past Sunday to earn a tie for 13th at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina. The back-to-back showings are the best of his PGA Tour career.
"It's been so fun to see him thrive out there and come into form," said Derek Rende, a former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga teammate of Jaeger who caddied for him at the Rocket Mortgage. "He knows that he can play out there, and we all know he can."
Originally, the St. Jude Championship was to contain 125 players, but Tommy Fleetwood (death of his mother), Daniel Berger (back injury) and Lanto Griffin (back surgery) have withdrawn.
The FedEx Cup playoffs consist of three tournaments - the St. Jude Championship, the 70-player BMW Championship in Wilmington, Delaware, and the coveted 30-player Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Those players with the lowest 65 scores and ties through two rounds at the St. Jude Championship will battle through the weekend, while the BMW Championship and Tour Championship do not have cuts.
Another Baylor alum, Harris English, missed out on the playoffs this year due to the nearly five months he was sidelined after undergoing hip labrum surgery. English collected two victories last season and reached the Tour Championship, where he finished 18th.
