JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Chattanooga Football Club lost 1-0 in its National Premier Soccer League Southeast Division game Saturday night against previously winless Jacksonville United FC. Hollis Donaldson scored in the 73rd minute for Jacksonville (1-4). CFC (4-1-1) visits Rocket City United this Saturday night.
Boxing
• Chattanooga's Ryan Martin, a rising senior at Central High School, defeated Devon Adams of Larose, La., Saturday night in the USA Boxing Region 4 Box-Off at the First Tennessee Pavilion. That earned him a return trip to the USA Nationals beginning June 19 in Colorado Springs, where U.S. Olympic team members will be determined. Saturday's competition matched Southeastern District winners from Tennessee and Alabama against Southern champions from Louisiana and Mississippi. Emily Dagnan from the Westside club also won, giving her a shot at the first Olympics boxing competition, and Memphis resident Javonta Charles, who has been training at Westside, won a superheavyweight bout that wasn't part of the regional box-off. He already had qualified for the nationals.
Baseball
• Third-place Lee University led all teams in the 2011 NAIA baseball World Series with six all-tournament selections late Friday night in Lewiston, Idaho: pitcher Shay Crawford, catcher Travis Anderson, first baseman Roberto Reyes, shortstop Joe Ramirez, outfielder Jonathan Clark and designated hitter Chris Grayson. Concordia (Calif.) beat Lubbock Christian 9-3 in the championship game Friday night, after Lubbock topped Lee, and the champions and runners-up each had five all-tournament players.
General
• Lee University baseball players Kris Dockery, Max Harvell and James Rechenbach were NAIA Scholar-Athletes for 2011, as were Bryan College's Jonathan Davis, Steven Brown and Jordan Day and Reinhardt first baseman Ethan Starr from McMinn Central High School. Day played at Trion High School, Brown at Walker Valley. Lee's Taylor Horseman, Lindsey Shein, Brittany Balough and Caitlin Beshears and Tennessee Wesleyan's Brittnie Hester and Heather Gibson were Scholar-Athletes for softball, Shein after being so honored for volleyball and Gibson for basketball, and Lee golfer Jeremy Lawson and tennis players Kassidy Sherlin, Michael Hewgley, Zach Smith, Michael Yokosuk and Renan Molineiro also were Scholar-Athletes this spring. Lee track honorees were reported previously.
• Tennessee Wesleyan College was the Appalachian Athletic Conference's overall institutional Champion of Character winner for the 2010-11 school year. This award is apart from the Athens school's success in the league's sports, which included going to NAIA national tournaments in women's soccer, women's basketball, men's and women's golf and baseball and finishing second in the National Women's Lacrosse League tournament. Sportsmanship and citizenship factor into the Character honor, and all the TWC teams participated in community service projects this year.
Auto Racing
• Jamie Perry of Ringgold won the Steel-Headed Late Model race Friday night at Boyd's Speedway for the third time this year. Lamar Scoggins was the runner-up in the 25-lap feature, and Kevin Gibson, James Gamble and Brian Jackson completed the top five. Maryville's Jason Welshan was the Crate Late Model winner with Jeff Smith second and Robby Mason third. Booger Brooks won in A-Hobby with a final-turn pass of Steve Tate, and Dallas Brooks won the B-Hobby race that included a fence-ripping, car-flipping wreck for Adam Jolly, who was unhurt. James Dykes won in Front Wheel Drive with Thomas Gilbert second.
Golf
• Emma de Groot, who recently ended her University of Tennessee at Chattanooga golf career, begins play Tuesday in the Ladies' British Open Amateur at the Royal Portrush course in Northern Ireland, and she will play June 15-19 as a member of the Australian team in the Astor Trophy competition at Lytham, England. The Ladies' British Open Amateur has two days of stroke play to determine the 64 competitors who go into match play. Marion Duvernay of France, a de Groot teammate for one semester, is in the Championnat du Leman on four courses in Switzerland this Friday through June 13.
Rowing
• Notre Dame High School and Chattanooga Junior Rowing alumna Joanna Poinsatte of Hixson recently was announced as a College Rowing Coaches of America Scholar-Athlete for 2011. She just completed her sophomore year as a psychology major at the University of Notre Dame. CRCA Scholar-Athletes must be in at least their second year of eligibility, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 and have rowed in a minimum of 75 percent of their teams' spring races or in a regional conference event. Poinsatte, who made the Big East all-academic team as a freshman, was the stroke for Notre Dame's second varsity 8 boat, which won a gold medal at this year's Big East regatta and helped the South Bend, Ind., school win its eighth consecutive Big East women's rowing title.
Tennis
• Ages 18- and 16-under boys' and girls' singles play got under way Saturday in the Tennessee State Junior Qualifying tennis tournament, which continues today through Tuesday at the Champions Club. See www.timesfreepress.com for Saturday's results.
