UTC's Miller, Teter Academic All-District

University of Tennessee junior offensive lineman Adam Miller from Cohutta, Ga., made the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District 3 football team for 2011, and junior middle blocker Christina Teter from Signal Mountain did likewise in volleyball. Both sets of teams were announced Thursday. Miller is the second football Moc to earn Academic All-District recognition, according to a UTC release; the construction management major has a 3.74 grade point average. Teter is a biology major with a 4.0 GPA, and the Red Bank High School graduate leads the Lady Mocs in blocking and is one of their kills leaders. Georgia junior offensive lineman Ty Frix from Calhoun joined Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Murray and punter Drew Butler on the District 4 football team.

Soccer

• GULFPORT, Miss. - The top-seeded and nationally second-ranked Lee University women's soccer team beat Faulkner 6-0 in the Southern States Athletic Conference semifinals Thursday and faces Mobile in Saturday's final. Lady Flames senior captain Jamie Achten was honored the night before as the league's player of the year, and Leah Fortune, Ode Fulutudilu, Ashley Aragona, Laura Thacker, Caroline Scales and Amy Cochran joined her on the All-SSAC first team with Charlotte Canlett making the second team. Thacker also made the all-freshman team, and Fortune was honored as the newcomer of the year and the offensive player of the year. Lee's Stephanie Surgener got the SSAC Champion of Character award. Aragona scored two goals Thursday, and Fortune, Acthen, Darcy Brannen and Rachael Nasralla also scored. Fulutudilu and Kathryn Healy each had two assists and Danielle Ciabattone and Cochran also had assists.

• WALESKA, Ga. - The Bryan women's soccer team couldn't pull off another upset in the Appalachian Athletic Conference playoffs, but the Lady Lions came close in losing 1-0 to Columbia in the semifinals Thursday. Ashley Forehand scored at 33 minutes from a Heather Moore assist for the South Carolina team (9-6-5), which outshot Bryan (4-14-2) 18-5. Stephanie Gagnon made eight saves in defeat.

• Bethany Logan scored two goals and Eliza Drew, Mo Cross, Teagan Wood, Kasey Craft, Rachel Carlton and Mary Buys added one each as Covenant College beat Tennessee Temple 8-0 in women's soccer Thursday on Lookout Mountain. Craft, Drew, Cross and Katelyn Newsome each had an assist for the Lady Scots (9-8-2), who outshot Temple (4-15) 34-2. Temple's Alisha Smith made 13 saves.

Softball

• Ooltewah's Abby Daniels on Thursday committed to play softball at NCAA Division III member Berry College near Rome, Ga. Daniels said the program had been in contact with her since two summers ago. She visited in September. "The campus is just beautiful," Daniels said. "I also like that it's not completely about softball. It's about academics, and I still get to play softball." Last spring for the Lady Owls she batted .370 with five homers, 15 doubles and 32 RBIs. "I think she's a great defensive catcher, too," Ooltewah coach Norma Nelson said. "I haven't seen Berry play, but I wouldn't be surprised if she went down there and became their best player right away." Daniels has a 4.0 GPA while taking advance-placement classes and is a certified member of Ooltewah's gifted program. She ranks second in her graduating class of 337 and made a 30 on the ACT. Daniels said she's considering majoring in chemistry.

Volleyball

• KINGSPORT, Tenn. - The Bryan College volleyball team ended its season Thursday at 20-19 with 3-0 losses to Montreat and Columbia in the AAC tournament. In the 25-22, 25-23, 25-18 loss to Columbia, the second-seeded Lady Lions got 10 kills from Makenzie Sindelar, 25 digs from Corrie Walker and 20 assists and 13 digs from Taylor Fink.

Golf

• ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - Cohutta's David Mansfield and Dalton's Ron Lowery are tied for first place in the first flight of the Georgia Senior Four-Ball Championship with a 70 Friday and a 3-under-par 141 at King & Prince Golf Course. Calhoun's C.J. Dodd and Melvin Nichelson are tied for sixth in the flight at 146.

• The First Tee of Chattanooga is selling "pre-loved" golf equipment, opening its practice range to the public and holding a relay contest at its facility on Hickory Valley Road on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. President Mike Jenkins said available equipment ranges from old $20 sets for beginners to more recent hybrids and drivers. The relay competition is to see how fast six players can play nine holes on the three-hole loop without the same player hitting consecutive shots.
