Lady Flames earn 701st Hudson win and other sports news

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Lee University volleyball team got coach Andrea Hudson her 700th win and soon added No. 701 on Saturday in the Lee Invitational tournament. Hudson (701-228) became one of five active NAIA coaches with 700-plus victories, and her 22 years are fewer than the other four. Marija Zelenovic and Irene Ojukwu each had 10 kills and Paula Martins added eight on .636 hitting in the 25-12, 25-17, 25-12 defeat of Olivet Nazarene, when Camil Martinez had 36 assists and Libby Peigen had 12 digs. Martinez and Peigen repeated those numbers and Zelenovic and Ojukwu had 14 and 10 kills as Lee (3-1) won 25-22, 25-15, 25-22 over Lindsey Wilson.

• Freshman Julimar Alvarado from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., put down 20 kills and senior libero Paula Passmore made 41 digs as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team beat USC Upstate 25-21, 25-21, 19-25, 32-30 in the Country Inns & Suites Invitational tournament Saturday at Maclellan Gymasium. UTC later beat Tennessee Tech 25-16, 25-15, 27-25. Christina Teter and Kasey Talley had 13 and 12 kills, Talley with 22 digs, and Bridget Camacho had 57 assists against USCU. Teter and Heather Parman made 11 and 10 kills and Camacho set 35 assists against Tech (1-2), while Passmore had 25 digs, Talley had eight kills with 14 digs and Melissa Green added 11 digs. The Mocs are 3-0 for the first time since 2001. Camacho was voted most outstanding player and joined on the all-tournament team by Talley, Passmore, USCU's Emily Sanders and Kaya McAvoy, TTU's Natalie Penrod and Alcorn State's Shaquanda Hollis.

• MONTREAT, N.C. - The Bryan College volleyball team lost 27-25, 30-28, 25-21 to Missouri Baptist and won 25-13, 25-22, 25-20 over Florida College Saturday in the Montreat College tournament. Chelsea Breaden had 17 kills with a .640 attack percentage against Florida College, while Makenzie Sindelar had 11 kills and Taylor Fink had 27 assists and nine digs. Fink had 36 assists in the loss, when Sindelar had 12 kills and Breaden made 11 digs. Carolyn Evans had three solo blocks against Missouri Baptist and seven kills on .545 hitting against FC. The Lady Lions (2-2) finished 20-19 and tied for second in the Appalachian Athletic Conference last fall and were picked to finish second again in David Shumaker's second season as coach.

• WALESKA, Ga. - Tennessee Temple University opened its volleyball season Saturday with 3-0 losses to Emmanuel and Reinhardt at the latter's tournament.

• DAYTON, Tenn. - The Bryan College men's soccer team won 3-0 over Truett-McConnell in Joey Johnson's first game as head coach Saturday night, as Andrew Knighten, Rasheed Malcolm and Nathan Adams scored goals. Tom Hemmings and Jordan Devlin had first-half assists three minutes apart for the Lions, who outshot the visitors 16-3. Adams netted a penalty kick 14 minutes into the second half. Johnson raced from the game to the bedside of his wife, who was in labor. Earlier in the day, the Bryan women lost 2-0 in their opener at Pikeville (Ky.).

• DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Lee University men's soccer team dropped to 1-1 for the season with a 1-0 loss Saturday at 24th-ranked Embry-Riddle. Alan Vezza scored on a corner-kick play at 66:58 for the hosts, who outshot the Flames 12-5.

• LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Tennessee Temple soccer teams lost 9-1 (women) and 12-0 Saturday at Georgia Gwinnett. Temple hosts the Concordia-Selma women at 6 and the Hiwassee men at 8 Tuesday night at Camp Jordan Park.

• The Chattanooga Quarterback Club's first luncheon meeting for the 2012-13 school year will be Monday at noon at Finley Stadium with UTC football coach Russ Huesman as the guest speaker. The public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal or $4 without.
