Lipscomb University freshman golfer Mikey Feher from Baylor School was the Atlantic Sun men's player of the week for his fourth-place finish in the F&M APSU Intercollegiate tournament. He began the event with a 67 and followed with rounds of 70 and 74. He has finished in the top 10 of every tournament in which he's played and bettered his finish in each, and his 71.6 stroke average leads the Bisons through nine rounds.
• Bear Trace at Tims Ford professional Jared Melson and Henry Horton State Park's Kevin Snell won the E-Z-GO Pro-Pro Championship tournament Monday and Tuesday at Chattanooga Golf & Country Club with a 15-under-par 127, and the host club's Bruce Etter with Madison Moore and The Honors Course's Henrik Simonsen with Byron Williams tied for second at 129. CGCC assistant pro Mitch Brock and his brother Matt tied for fifth at 131.
Running
• Former GPS multisport star Tory Kemp was honored this week as North Carolina's women's track and field freshman of the year for her 2012-13 accomplishments. The award came at the Chapel Hill school's banquet for track and cross country. Kemp finished second in the heptathlon and third in the pentathlon in the Atlantic Coast Conference championships and was an NCAA first-round qualifier in the high jump. She also had the Tar Heels' second best time in the 60-meter hurdles and was a national All-Academic honoree.
Basketball
• As the Lee University men's basketball team prepares for its Nov. 2 opener against Tennessee Temple, one of the Flames' newcomers is Roane State transfer Antonio Thomas. Thomas, a 6-foot-4 guard/forward from Charlotte, N.C., averaged 15 points a game last season and excites Lee coach Tommy Brown with his versatility and athletic ability. "Valentino is an explosive athlete," Brown said in a Lee release. "He is very athletic and can really get to the rim. He has the athleticism and toughness to be a great defensive weapon as well. He's an even better person and a good student." According to Thomas, the Cleveland program truly is a dream destination. "The day before I made my decision, I prayed that God would show me the college I was supposed to attend in the form of a dream," the digital media major related in the school release. "In my dream that same night, I walked out of a building, turned around to look back at the building and at the top of the building was a flame symbol. I woke up and told my parents I was going to Lee."
Soccer
• The Covenant College soccer teams split their USA South games Wednesday at Huntingdon in Montgomery, Ala., winning 1-0 in overtime in the women's game and falling 1-0 in the men's. Bethany Logan scored the game-winning goal in the opening minute of the first overtime period. In the men's game, Nick Stinson scored for Huntingdon in 40th minute with an assist by Jake Morgan.
• Tennessee Wesleyan recorded a win and tie an Appalachian Athletic Conference soccer doubleheader Wednesday against Point University. The TWC women won 2-1, while the men played to a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods.
• Covenant College junior Snoopy Davidson followed his USA South honor as men's soccer offensive player of the week with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's national honor for NCAA Division III. Davidson had five goals and three assists as the Scots went 2-0-1 last week.
Volleyball
• Sewanee lost 3-1 against visiting Centre College in Southern Athletic Association volleyball Wednesday evening. The set scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-15, 28+26. Freshman Diamond Steward led the Tigers' attack with 15 kills, and junior Rachel Schuman had 26 assists. Kayla Sewell and Kristy Gray each had 20 digs in the loss.
• Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan had a team-high 11 kills and Kristen Pickett from Cleveland High School had 31 assists in Carson-Newman's 3-0 South Atlantic Conference volleyball loss (25-13, 25-23, 25-22) Tuesday night at Mars Hill.
• Holly Mount and Victoria Sprouse had 14 kills each and Rachel McGill had 35 assists as Georgia Northwestern ended its volleyball season with a 3-1 (18-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-20) loss Tuesday night in Rossville to four-year school Oakwood University. The Lady Bobcats wound up 6-14.
Rowing
• Chattanooga Junior Rowing medaled in 10 of the 14 races it entered in the 21st annual Chattanooga Head Race last weekend. Susie Zeglen and Andi Cabrera were first and second in women's youth single, and Connor and Quinn Nash in men's youth pair and Emma Mangan, Anna Bible, Jilly Fulgham, Grace White, Jordan Grant, Kathy Zeglen, Becca Meigs, and Annette Robbins with Tom Tortoa in women's youth novice 8 also earned gold medals. CJR silver medalists besides Cabrera were Olivia Anderson, Micky McGregor, Megan Hill and Katie Sutton in women's youth quad; Keir Hutchison and Phillip Champion in men's youth double and Susie Zeglen, Chloe Vernon, Aubrey Moorehead, Meghan Ray and Michaela Leaf in women's youth four. CJR had three bronze finishes and three fourth places.
