Red Bank Middle School teacher and coach Geno Phillips won the Raccoon Mountain 10k state championship road race Saturday in 36 minutes, 19 seconds, and Lisa Holt of Ithaca, N.Y., was the women's winner and sixth overall in 41:32. Masters winner Dean Thompson of Cohutta, Ga., was second overall in 36:47, and Ryan Shrum, Jeremy Miller and Tripp McCallie completed the top five in 38:02, 38:47 and 39:04. Jennifer Curtis was the second female finisher and 12th overall in 45:35. Justin Guy of Dayton won the 5k in 18:41 with 14-year-old Jasper Wilson of Rossville second in 19:44, and 18-year-old Mary Paige Pepper of Murfreesboro was the first female and 14th overall in 25:36. Her 16-year-old sister Maggie was next in the same time.

Soccer

* Covenant won both USA South soccer matches Saturday night against Ferrum at Martinsville, Va., 2-1 in the men's game and 1-0 in the women's. Bryce Bartlett scored unassisted 1:21 into the men's contest and Noah Wiersema broke a 1-1 tie in the 28th minute, also unassisted, for the Scots (2-5, 1-0), who outshot their hosts 15-9 with a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. They got six saves from Daniel Kubin. Rachel Lemay matched that saves total for the Lady Scots (4-2, 2-1). Allie Vannoy followed up her own blocked shot for a goal at 58:07, and that stood up as the only score of the game.

* Sewanee tied Centre 2-2 after two overtimes in women's soccer but lost 2-0 to the Kentucky school in the men's half of the Southern Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday. The Centre women are 8-1-1 and got two goals from Destinie Graves but were equalized twice by the Tigers (2-3-2), with Mary "Sissy" Frank scoring from a Shelby Meckstroth assist in the 39th minute and Savannah Williams netting an unassisted shot in the 84th. Sewanee's women had a 12-9 edge in shots. For the Centre men (3-4-1, 1-0), John Herd in the first half and Christian Gateskill in the second had unassisted goals. The Colonels outshot the Tigers (2-6-1, 0-1) 21-8.

* Tomide Adabale scored four goals as Dalton State whipped visiting Fisk 10-1 in men's soccer Saturday. C.J. Moore scored twice and Emmanuel Olusanya, Tony Baza, Andres Pena and Ramiro Guerrero also had goals, while Grant Dupertuis, Isael Guiterrez, Connor Curran, Tyler Hudson and Jose Villalobos had assists for the Roadrunners (7-2-1).

* Bryan College pulled out a 2-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer win Saturday night over visiting St. Andrews. Scores by Rafael Mentzingen in the first minute and Charlie Clarke in the 58th lifted the Lions to 4-3-2, 1-0-1 in the league, and lowered the North Carolina team to 3-3-1, 1-2. Clarke and Joel Glover had Bryan assists. Earlier in the day, the Bryan women lost 4-0 at Columbia (S.C.) College, as Ashley Tanner had three goals for the Koalas (8-1, 2-0). The Lady Lions are 3-4, 1-1.

* Tennessee Wesleyan won both matches of an AAC soccer doubleheader Saturday at Milligan, 3-2 in the women's and 3-2 in overtime in the men's. That made the Lady Bulldogs 4-4-1, 3-1 in the league, and the TWC men 5-3-1, 2-0-1.

Golf

* The Tennessee Junior Cup golf tournament sponsored by PGA Tour player Scott Stallings will be held Oct. 10-11 at The Grove Club in College Grove, and Team East will include Tommy Oliver of Sewanee among the 10 boys and Malia Stovall of Winchester among the four girls selected. Nationally top-ranked Davis Shore of Knoxville also is on Team East for the Ryder Cup-style competition.

* Maggie Scott of Charleston, Tenn., is tied for 99th at 85 and Georgia McCravey of Chattanooga shot 89 in the first day of stroke-play qualifying Saturday in the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur at Hillwood Country Club in Nashville. The first-day cutoff for the low 64 who would make match play was at 82 with another round of stroke play today. Ginny Burkey of Eugene, Ore. leads after shooting a par round of 72. Tim Jackson of Germantown, Tenn., a member of The Honors Course at Ooltewah, leads the men's Senior Amateur in Egg Harbor Township, N.J., with a 3-under-par 68.

* The Dalton State golf teams both will be in tournaments Monday and Tuesday. The men will be at Kinderlou Forest Club in Valdosta, Ga., for the Thomas University Fall Invitational, while the DSC women will be in the Carey Collegiate at Canebrake Country Club in Hattiesburg, Miss. Each Roadrunners squad already has won a tournament this semester.

Football

* Tennessee Titans radio play-by-play announcer Mike Keith will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without. Keith lived in Chattanooga for a few years while growing up.
