In only her second time to compete in the pentathlon, Signal Mountain freshman Lowry Briley finished third at Thursday's TSSAA Small Class state championship event at Austin Peay University.

Briley finished second in the 800-meter run and third in both the 100 dash and long jump, finishing with 2,409 total points.

East Nashville senior Kennedi Johnson won the state title with 2,835 total points, followed by junior teammate Jalena Curbeam with 2,618. McMinn Central's Melia Baker and Sequatchie County's Channing Barker tied for fourth with 2,187 points each.

"The first time she ever competed in the pentathlon was at our state qualifier a couple of weeks ago, and she won it," Signal Mountain coach Dustin Carpenter said of Briley. "She comes from an athletic family and has a lot of ability, but we weren't sure which event she would be best suited for, so we tried her in multiple events and she showed a lot of potential.

"She finished behind two girls who have been doing this event a lot longer than her, so that's a pretty impressive day."

Briley will compete in four other events at next week's Spring Fling - the 100 hurdles, long jump and 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Soddy-Daisy's Kelsey Henderson finished fifth overall in the Large Class pentathlon, which was won by Centennial's Avery McMullen. Henderson's best finish in an individual event was tied for second in the high jump, and she was third in the shot put.

Brainerd's Joseph Norwood is leading the Class Small decathlon after the first day of events. Norwood won the 100 meters, 400 meters and triple jump events and was third in the pole vault. He leads Alcoa's Hunter Marsh by 79 points heading into today's final events.

In the Class Large decathlon, Walker Valley's Zeke Westfield is currently fourth, 318 points behind the leader.
